i was wondering if i could save my address book data content on an external drive so that if some random person got my computer they couldn't steal my contacts?

Do you mean so that Address Book will only have your contacts when the external hard drive is connected? Not sure about how you would do that.

Otherwise you can save your contacts anywhere. Just open Address Book and choose File --> Back up Address Book. Or you can Export vCards. But all your contacts would still be there, unless you deleted them. Then later you could Import/Revert to Backup. That would be a cumbersome process though.

In my opinion Address Book is not a good choice for contacts when privacy is a concern. Some Mac applications use Address Book information as usernames, profiles, or whatever (e.g. iChat). Maybe you should explore some other options for storing contacts? I use GMail and Microsoft Exchange via Entourage/Outlook.
