So I've had my white macbook for about 5 months and I started to notice the trackpad getting a little shiny and not as "textured"
I googled solutions about how to clean the oil off but couldn't really find anything, but I did come across skinstyler.com. It's basically like a sticker you put over the trackpad, but it's really thin and doesn't interfere with the function. Also the adhesive isn't so sticky that it'll leave a residue (unlike my Marware wrist rest..ugh). I was pretty skeptical of the company at first b/c they're based in Malaysia, but it actually came pretty quickly (had to sign for the envelope) and the skin is perfect. I got a cute printed one and the quality of the printing is pretty good too. They offer a variety of patterns, including plain ones, and you can even upload your own. I sent them an email saying that I loved it, and they sent me a 20% off coupon code- if anyone needs it feel free. the code is : MUGskin

also if anyone knows how to get oil off the keys...i'd really appreciate any tips! I didn't like the feel of the silicon cover that you can get...

    Oil?

    What do you mean oil?

The trackpad plastic has most likely smoothed out from constant use...the plastic itself has worn down. This happens with all plastic surfaces over time unless they are protected/ covered.....

Yupyup. You've polished the surface of your touchpad. It's pretty well unavoidable. (Think of that spot on the spacebar on a heavily used keyboard.)

Oh it's not oil then? No wonder it didn't clean off...
I've seen people with ibooks or well-used macbooks who have this big smooth circle in the middle of their touchpads..it looked pretty ugly not to mention felt weird using it

I think that's just wear-and-tear, and not really avoidable unless you get covers for it.
