Hey I'm upgrading to Leopard tomorrow (good grades! =) ) and I was wondering, can I upgrade to leopard and keep every single one of my files on my computer?

FOr Time machine, can I use my iPod in Disk mode as an external drive?

I was doing a google search earlier and in some other forum it was pretty much decided you can not use the ipod's to install the OS from, but other USB sources you can.

I'm not trying to install the OS on the iPod to boot from it. I'm wondering if I can use my iPod as an external drive for Time Machine.

Sam, what would I click to just upgrade the OS but not overwrite the files? Is there something called like "upgrade"? lol I know that sounds retarded but it's hard to word...

    I don't see why it shouldn't work.

Probably not. If it is a Mac formatted iPod then it should be in HFS+ which Time Machine will work with, so it should accept it for that. However, since Time Machine images your drive and then adds to the image as time goes on, there is no way your iPod will have enough disk space, unless it was a 180 GB Classic, and even then it may be a stretch if you have a lot of music on it. Time Machine will require a rather large disk.

On a side note, I think someone talked about booting a Time Machine image. Time Machine's images are not bootable, another strike against it.

Time machine drives can only be used as time machine drives if I recall correctly. So that means you could no longer use your iPod to listen to music if it was being used for Time Machine.

I just did an Archive and Install this morning, it took about 30 minutes. All my files and preferences were preserved, and now I'm on a shiny install of Leopard!

    Really?

Can someone confirm this? I just bought a 500Gb drive for backups, I would not want to give the whole thing over to time machine if I got Leopard...

I believe that is the case. There would be a real quick solution, partition it.
