If I already install Vista on a bootcamp partition, should I just use that for Parallels or should I install XP on it (since XP has a smaller footprint, and is therefore, more efficient for virtualization)?

I'd go with XP because it uses less of the system resources and therefore is more efficient and faster for a virtual machine.

I'd guess that supposing you are planning on playing games or something hardware intensive with bootcamp, I *think* XP is the way to go since it's less of a resource hog. And I've heard stories of how XP would be 5-10fps increase in certain games vs using Vista. Then there are other people who beg to differ, but I think that to be safe, just stick with XP.
