CMS - 16GB (2X8GB) RAM Memory for Apple iMac 27-inch 3.1GHz Intel Core i5 (MC814LL/A) - CM10246410600sox20212
If I bought this would this fit into my HP laptop?

Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
iMacs use SOdimm standard, not the dimm standard from desktops, so buy whatever ram fits your budget
-
Does iMac use special type of ram? Or is it all the same with all other types of notebook?
-
Why would it matter? That is not a good price at $125
technically it should work, but you could get the same thing at Crucial.com, guaranteed for your exact machine, for $75.99

RAM is RAM is RAM. Special "Mac" RAM is nothing more than higher-priced versions of regular RAM. Just buy whatever's on sale at Newegg, TigerDirect, NCIX, or whoever happens to be the cheapest.
-
Just be carefull to 1 thing, I noticed that many of the "MAC RAM" is only DDR3 1066, and some of the newer laptops use standard DDR3 1333. If you change all the ram it shouldn't matter that much but it's safer not to mix different RAM speeds, it won't kill your laptop, but it's safer for optimal performance.
-
Well, it'll just reduce speed to the lowest common speed (1066), but it's still a good idea to match speeds (in that case, to 1333 or 1600).

You can still get the ram and try... it just may work ok.
The iMac RAM will probably work just fine.... like any other ram.

Looked up the laptop on Kingston and Crucial, who both keep decent databases of specs, so they can sell parts... both list it as an 8gb max machine.
Sadly HPs website isn't clear at all, it just says it comes with 1 4gb dimm and has 2 slots....

Often machines that list a certain amount as max memory really can use more... sometimes they cannot. If often depends on what was available when the specs were written. You can try it... buy the memory somewhere that has a decent return policy in case you need to return it.
Would this RAM for iMac be for desktops or laptops?
