Here's a question for some of you longer-time Mac users.

I have an iBook (Sept. 2001 model, I think it was just call Dual USB back then) that I still use from time to time, and I'd definitely like to keep it around for casual use and maybe to give to my mom for her everyday needs.

There are a few things that I need to do to it to make it work better (mainly a new battery and a new power cord, as the one it has is bent in a few places on the plug and doesn't fit as well as it used to). The MAJOR thing I want to do is get it to work wirelessly. I know my options are kinda limited, but I'd like to know what options there are.

I do know that I can try to track down an Airport internal card to put in it, but those are kinda hard to find, plus they're rather expensive for an 802.11b network card. If anyone knows a good website to find one (besides eBay), I'd like to know.

What options do I have as far as USB adapters? I know D-Link makes one, but do their newer ones work too? And will it work with USB1.1? Do any OTHER brands work, even unofficially?

Any USB 2.0 device will work on USB 1.1, it just won't be as fast. Does the computer have a PCMCIA slot where you could add a USB 2.0 card? If not, I found this which claims to be Mac friendly in that drivers for OS X are available.

Yeah, the iBook I have (nor any of them, that I know of) doesn't have PCMCIA.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

Oh, and about my eBay comment: I already know they're on eBay. I've bid on many of them. I've yet to win one. :p

I guess I'm just too frugal for my own good.

I used a d-link usb 2.0 802.11g wifi stick on a G3 iBook and it worked ok for me. Occasionally it was a bit tempermental and lost the connection but the vast majority of the time it was fine.

Heh, sounds like my netgear wireless router. It's tempermental too. They sound like a perfect match, in fact. :p
