Can I expect a Windows installation done through Parallels or BootCamp to destabilize my future MacBook? I am returning an HP dv9000t for a MacBook Pro but would like to run a few Windows programs I have purchased. My concern is that having Widnows anywhere on the MacBook Pro will have a long-term destabilizing effect or otherwise make it vumnerable to acting like a problematic Windows machine. I do not want to lose the stability inherent to OSX.

Use Parallels. That way if your Windows gets hosed with viruses, you can just easily create a new Windows image. You also don't have to restart your computer under Parallel.
-
Your Windows partition will have no effect on your OS X partition. If you Windows partition becomes messed up, simply get rid of it. Your OS X partition will remain unchanged.

When using boot camp you can set windows to have or not have access to your Mac partition. I would recommend you not let it have access to prevent any virus's from getting into your Mac files.
You can also use both at the same time. I have a 15 GB boot camp partition and I also have parallels booting from that. -
You can have both but it really depends what you want to do. If it's 3D or resource demanding things get Boot Camp. Otherwise Parallels. But remember you can use your Boot Camp partition with Parallels.

Choose Custom as your set up option(instead of typical) and just continue on until you get to the origin option. Then choose Boot Camp.

boot camp is greyed out for me... why is this? instead of windows I have ubuntu installed andwould like to run that in parallels, is that possible? or does it have to be windows?
-
For Linux you have to use Parallels, and only parallels. I wouldn't be surprised if Linux was supported with bootcamp in leopard, though.

Are you guys really that paranoid about virus's on windows?
Except for rare occasions [Blaster was], its not that bad. I haven't had a virus on any of my personal systems in like 6 years. -
Windows via Parallels and/or Boot Camp
