Hi guys, I want to try out an experiment if you will...

As some of you know, Microsoft Windows supported the PowerPC architecture at one point, the latest version being Windows NT 4.0.

I was just wondering if it would be possible to grab a copy of it, and install it onto my iMac G3 or any PowerPC Mac for that matter. I think it would be kind of cool.

Anyone see any flaws/reasons why it shouldn't work? I mean, Apple itself in 1996 was planning on running Windows NT 4.0 on it's line of servers when their OS was going down the tube.

    Cheers.

I don't see any reason why you can't, go for it.

I guess, but it wouldn't be very useful.

nt4.0 is windows 200 yeah? Coz i know xp is built on nt 4.0 which was already in use on the previous version of windows and it was windows 2000. Anyway, If im correct, then may be you could try it. You could use your machine for torrents (if a torrent software exists for it).

Never tried NT workstation 4.0 on a PPC, but NT server worked great on an old Mac Pro.

NT 4.0 came out in 1996. It's the first NT kernel OS to use the post-Program Manager type interface.

Windows 2000 came out in late 1999, and is "NT 5" essentially (going by the kernel version).

XP came out in 2001, and is the successor to Windows 2000, as it's kernel "5.1." Fun fact: Windows 2000 was supposed to be the NT OS sold "to the masses" and I remember Windows 2000 displays at the local CompUSA. For some reason MS backed away from this decision at the last minute and did the Windows ME thing instead, waiting another iteration for XP to consolidate the Win9x and NT users to one architecture.

the funny thing added to that.. is Vista was basically NT 6 and Windows "7" is labeled as NT 6.1 :p

but NT4 is next to useless, PPC even more so than x86.

Can Windows NT 4.0 run normal windows programs or does it need to be specifically made for it?
