I noticed the new taskbar, it looks too chunky, IMO.

Did you also read the articles saying there are a lot of fake images out there right now? A few artists have been busy at work.

Anyway, just a word of caution before believing it.

Agreed, that's why I linked to the credible sources.

Credible sources, maybe (I don't read those so I don't know personally). But credible images?

That's all I'm saying...unless its proven to be official from MS...doubt.

It is from the D conference where Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer demo'd a little of Windows 7.

I have not seen the taskbar/dock, but if there is one thing I like better about Windows it is the taskbar over the dock. The dock is beautiful, especially in Leopard, but it is not very functional. Thankfully, Expose fixes that issue.

Multitouch is nearly useless on a vertical monitor setup, and monitors that lay flat on desks (think Surface, but smaller) are not really practical. Where multitouch is useful is phones, UMPCs, and tablets. I'm curious to see where they are trying to go with this. Are they really trying to be innovative, or are they responding to iPhone-mania? If they are trying to innovate, this may be good. If they are just trying to capture iPhone-like buzz, it will likely be less than spectacular.

Hey but isn't the technology called "Multi-Touch" a patent of Apple's? Can anyone develop touch-screen software, and call it Multi-Touch?

Also, yeah, in that video, there's one guy that actually says:
"Yeah, you can find this on an iPhone as well" hehe ;)

Too bad this technology only recently has become popular because of the iPhone - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-touch

People tend to forget that rip offs happens on both sides, just Microsoft seems to generate more "hate".

It's all over the internet now, you can see it in a video from All D things also with Bill gates, Steve Ballmer, Walt Mossberg, and Windows 7 ‘User Experience’ chief Julie Larson-Green showing off the features:

    http://apcmag.com/windows_7_gets_touchyfeely.htm

In the video, wait for mossberg to ask the question about the dock, you can clearly see it in the video too.

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, Microsoft usually does a half-baked rip off and abandons it a few years later whereas Apple usually improves on it in some way. You are right though, rip-offs occur on both sides.

I wish Apple would "rip-off" Windows' Explorer. Finder is really bad in comparison. Also wish Apple could come up with an alternative to say, Microsoft Exchange server.

I just don't buy this whole idea of surface brought to the laptop screen. How am I suppose to work like that for a few hours? We should have some clever mouse-like solution... or is it only me?

Everything they showed was slower then using a mouse.

I can see it as an option, but nothing they showed was quicker that way except to smudge up a screen.

Unless they can do something useful with it, it seems like a gimick.

I can think of applications where this could be useful such as in a hospital etc, but the machines are already 1 touch buttons or touch screens already. So this is looking like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist yet. At least to me.

there is nothing new here of practical use, before i hadn't bothered watching the video but now all they have is google earth with a touchscreen and some useless apps. i dont see this as practical for use with a desktop, the reason touch has been so successful for devices like the iphone is because it doesn't have the space for other input peripherals like mouse or keyboard, its basically just a gimmick.

You mean the reason it has been successful on the iPhone is because it's its ONLY way to control the phone? Not good if you ask me. Keys are usually faster. But why the heck are people complaining? If you ask me the more the merrier, you make it sound like this is a bad idea. "Oh no, a feature I might not use, remove plox".

It's good that the feature is there. It'll get used eventually, you just need to wait for someone to come up with a good idea. And all companies rip off each other, that's just how things work. And I do believe W7 will look different in 2-3 years, yes, yes I do.

I think multi-touch for computers, at least as we know it, is premature for the market. I couldn't imagine doing all my work with touch, but some areas, yes. I think so far Apple's been doing a good compromise between the two. You still do need a physical keyboard for say typing.
