I was sort of interested in doing this, until I read a little more about what XP Mode is, and how it works as a virtual machine under Windows.

Is this just asking for trouble? I mean, running a virtual machine from within a virtual machine on a Mac, if I am understanding Microsoft's XP mode concept.

If both uses hardware assisted virtualisation there would be trouble...
Anyway you can test and find out.

I am running Windows 7 home premium under a Fusion VM.
I was considering purchasing a Win7 Pro upgrade for the XP mode....that is until I read today what it entails (running XP in a VM under Windows).

I am now quite a bit less sure I want to spend the $$ for Win7 Pro.

Wow, this would be interesting to see! Anyways, I must admit I was misled with XP Mode. Being naive and not doing my homework, I was disappointed what XP mode actually is. I was hoping that you could simply run any program in 'XP Mode', just as easy as running in different compatibility modes. Perhaps something more like Crossover for Mac. Oh well.

Ok, just loaded up my Win7 Ultimate x64 in VMware Fusion 3.0 and ran the HAV Detection tool and got a big ole sorry, this hardware doesn't support hardware-assisted virtualization message.

So the answer would be no, you cannot run XP mode within a Win7 virtual machine.
