I would like to buy a 3G iphone for my sister, but since it come with a plan, I am wondering if it's gonna work on my 1st gen iphone (talking about the EDGE)? as my current contract just expired.

so you just want to give her the phone...

maybe keep the 3g and give her the original? especially if she isn't going to be using a 3g data plan. otherwise its just a waste of money.

You can't unlock the iPhone 3G and you need the $70+ plan for it, so using the iPhone 3G plan on your first one isn't a good idea. There is a way to do it, but you have to pay for the $10 extra over the first-gen iPhone contract, and your sister would still need to get her own plan. Why not just buy one and pay the early termination fee if you want to give it to her as a gift? Or you could just give her an Apple or ATT gift certificate and tell her that she can use it to get an iPhone 3G.

The 3g has been unlocked, and anyone can do it on their own computer.

This is news to me too... I'd love to buy the iPhone 3GB (now that it's FINALLY in Canda), but from what I've heard, it hasn't been unlocked yet... a link would be cool. :)

There is a way to buy the 3G but revert to the old iPhone plan. If you swap the sim cards and connect the old phone to iTunes, it will ask you to pick a plan and text. Pick what you want and stick with it for 2 years.

Down the road ATT may close this loophole and come after people but this is one way to do it till the unlcked ones are released by Apple.
