    Will deleting my 'main' administrator account cause much problems?

    Okay, here's my problem. I bought myself a Macbook Pro this morning from my school's notebook vendor, but they gave me a really stupid short & home name; however I realized creating a new user allows you to pick whatever you want.

    What I want to know is - Will creating a new administrator account and deleting the old one completely (including home drive) affect my system software? My vendor configured Microsoft Office 2008 & Norton Antivirus (not that I care about this one) onto the main administrator account; will everything run just as well on my new user? (I'm mainly interested to know about Microsoft Office)

    Thanks. =)

    You are aware that you can change your name by going to System Prefs>Accounts and then making sure the little lock on the bottom left corner is unlocked. Then, right click on the user name you want to change from the list on the left and select ADVANCED. Just make sure you don't change anything except your name and home directory location.

    That article is correct in the steps you have to take. You do have to disable some stuff such as Automatic Login and shared folders (if you have shared any, you don't by default - so you can ignore everything in that article that mentions web sharing) before you change your username, and you will have to change the name of your Home Folder in Terminal beforehand, as Finder cannot bypass the security.
    However, most applications will work just fine after a restart, as OS X stores all the user preferences in the Home Folder, which you will have renamed and reassigned to your new username in System Prefs.

    Basically, you only want to follow the last part "The full monty: changing your short username and the name of your home folder" of that article. Everything else is irrelevant.
