I was looking to buy a macbook (not pro) and the only thing holding me back is whether or not the macbook (not the pro) can output to an external monitor/tv in 1080i. I've had trouble getting a 100% positive answer. I asked at a store and no one was sure. I have heard it can do 1920x1200 (progressive). I also called apple and one of the reps insisted that it can only go up to 1280x800 probably not understanding my question. I have an old hdtv that takes in 1080i through a component connection and can also get a dvi->component cable. However, I would like to know if anyone has been able to display interlaced resolutions without problems and especially if someone has actually tried outputting to 1080i through a component connection. Any help or where else I can find out for sure would be appreciated.

I know that Windows laptops with the Intel GMA 950 support 1080i. It supports a max resoultion of 2048x1536 at 75 Hz of it has a DVI port. So under bootcamp and windows you will be fine. What I am not sure about is the OSX drivers for the GMA 950.

Yes, the MacBook supports up to 1920x1200 on an external display. Since Full HD is 1920x1080, yes you can display even 1080p.
The built-in screen of the MacBook only supports up to 1280x800. Maybe that's where the Apple rep got confused.
Will Macbook do 1080i component (apple techs didn't know)
