On my iMac, the Software Update preferences are checked for A) "Check for updates: Weekly" and "Download important updates automatically". That being, the case, I've never seen the Software Update download anything automatically. I always have to click "Check Now" and download updates manually. Despite having installed many software updates, it shows that the last check was Friday, November 21, 2008 at 11:24AM.

    What's the deal?

I've only see the auto-update on my mbp download updates when i open applications.
For example: i open an outdated version of Microsoft office and it automatically downloads a new update for it.
