Why did you choose to buy a MBP instead of the base MacBook??
Post up your reasons - i'm interested why, plus I've ordered a 2.2Ghz MBP and I need reassurance i've made the right decision!

CPU, GFX, Screen size, LED LCD, Design. Pretty much everything about the MBP made me choose it over the MacBook.

I wanted a powerful, lightweight laptop with a good-sized screen. The MBP satisfied all those requirements. Also, I wanted a change of pace from the typical Microsoft Windows world. The part that sealed the deal for me was the ability to use either Parallels or VMWare Fusion to run Windows inside of Mac OSX, so I could continue doing my day-to-day functions as a software developer.

    Edit
While taking into account other's experiences with getting anything does help, the choice ultimately comes down to what you really want and need. If you are a student who doesn't do any really intensive tasks or run any demanding applications, then the MB is the way to go. If you do need more horsepower to run stuff, or to play high-end games, then the MBP is the correct choice.

What do you intend to do mainly with your laptop?

engineering purposes. my school recommends a machine and you don't want to get stuck with specs lower than their recommended laptop if you choose not to buy it.

I wanted a mac laptop and I needed a dedicated gpu. that was enough.

    Hey Matthew,

I didn't buy the MacBook Pro (I didn't buy this MacBook either; it was a prize :p), but if I did, I would buy the MBP over the MacBook because:

Design: The MacBook Pro has a beautiful design. The MacBook is very nice but the MacBook Pro is sleek and ultra thin.
LED-backlit screen: Very bright, very energy efficient.
NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT: Most powerful graphics card for the 15.4-inch category. Capable of playing most games well.
Santa Rosa processors: Although a lot of it isn't utilized yet.
Backlit keyboard: Its a nice feature.
Up to 4 GB RAM: Not that I would go up to 4 GB though :p, but its nice to know you can if its ever necessary.

the macbook pro keyboard feels much better than the macbook's one. JMO. some will say that the macbook keyboard is good, but it feels cheap to me.

    great purchase.

i would call them different. obviously neither keyboard is cheap- both are really specialized and obviously expensive to make compared to a normal / budget laptop keyboard

Unless I get a very important email by Friday, I'll be at the Apple Store on Saturday picking up a MBP. It's just as powerful (specs-wise) as any other 15" model on the market while being about 1lb. lighter and it's got an LED display. It also is very thin and sleek, has a slot-loading drive, and OSX is so much better than Vista.

I suppose the main reasons I wouldn't get a Macbook are screen size and discrete graphics.

I bought it because its the fastest readily available system on the market. OS X is a nice perk as well.

Are you listing negatives of the macbook?

    discrete graphics = dedicated graphics

it means like "separate from the motherboard"

i don't own any of them yet, but i'm planning to do a switch in next few months time. The main reasons i will choose MBP instead or MacBook are weight, screen size, LED-backlit and capability of 4GB RAM.

The thing i don't like in MacBook mainly is its weight. For that weight, I would rather getting a MBP 15" which only around 0.2lbs heavier and has better screen size and so on.

Sorry for my wording. What I meant was the things that made me pick the MBP over the Macbook. The screen isn't big enough and it doesn't have discrete graphics.

It was the most sexy 17" out there. With the new hi-res screen it was a slamdunk. I needed a hi-res screen for software development + photos. With bootcamp (and VM stuff), it meant that i could migrate my development environment to a MBP using windows...

oh yah and before people say you wasted your money buying an expensive 17" just to run windows... my company paid for it so, it wasn't my money ;)

Good times on it so far (even running Vista).

    - Runs my DAW applications flawlessly and highly recommended for Audio work
    - LED LCD
    - Santa Rosa
    - Durable enough for the amount I travel
    - 8600m GT
    - Express Card Slot
    - Bigger Screens

I just bought a Macbook Pro but thinking about getting a Macbook since my bro wants to buy my Macbook Pro. ;)

Reasons I can't seem to let the Macbook Pro go and why I originally bought it over the Macbook:

    -LED backlit screen.
-Design. It's simply beautiful. Macbook isn't bad but I think it kind of looks like a toy compared to the MBP.
-Hard drive shock protection, although hopefully I'll never need it. ;)
-Keyboard. Best keyboard I've ever used.
-Ports. Firewire 800, full size DVI, etc.
-Dedicated GPU for games if I ever decide to install CS: Source again.

Many of the same reasons aforementioned by these fine NBR members.

Although I just got one of the new keyboards for my iMac and I'm kinda wishing my MBP had the MacBook's keyboard. Not that the MBP's keyboard is bad, it's actually one of the nicest notebook keyboards I've ever used. I'm just infatuated with the new Apple keyboard (which is very similar to the MacBook's).

matthewp, You made the right decision. If you ordered online then the next several days [up until the MBP arrives] will be the only time when you doubt yourself; because once your new computer arrives you'll be more than content. If you can, go to an Apple Store and play with one to ease your concerns.

I was in the Apple Store debating whether or not i Wanted a MBP or MB - i chose an MB and its not because im cheap - i walked into the store with $2,500 cash not knowing what i wanted. I chose the MB solely because i didnt NEED the MBP - granted, the MBP is a wonderful, gorgeous system but if you dont absolutely NEED the extra 2 inches of screen, the aluminum brushed casing and a dedicated gpu the MB performs just as flawlessly. I loaded it with Adobe Suite 3, Final Cut Pro, Office 2004, iwork, ilife, and about 50 other programs and it still runs amazing. Dont spend the extra money if you dont need the extra perks...just my opinion..but either way you absolutely can not go wrong with either one.

I think you will be quite happy with your decision.

I can't wait to get mine.

I have to agree with him. I can afford either one, but the macbook and the MBP is awfully huge in terms of price difference... and most of the added features are features that I can live without. The current gen macbooks are as fast as the previous generation MBP. I'm also willing to take the slightly lower weight and smaller footprint --- while saving some cash for RAM and maybe an external monitor.
