It is a NETGEAR RangeMax 240 Router and for some reason, I can't get it to connect to my MacBook. The ethernet cable that I plug in to it connects just fine when plugged directly into the computer, but when in the router, I can't get it to work..

    Anyone have any info? Thanks.

Are you using a crossover cable?

So you connect the mac book to another computer via ethernet cable and it works fine?

If this is true then you are using a crossover cable. You need to get a "straight" ethernet cable because the ethernet cable you used to connect directly from computer to computer is crimped differently to an ethernet cable that connects to a router or a switch.

No no, the ethernet cable is running from our comcast modem to the router. But when I connect it directly to the Macbook, the cable is running from the modem to the macbook

There could be a number of reasons. You should probably refer to the manual that came with the router for wireless setup, if you lost it there is an online version WPNT834 RangeMax 240 Reference Manual [PDF]. Read Chapter 4 Wireless Configuration - How to Setup and Test Basic Wireless Connectivity.

Basically you need to be connected to the router via Ethernet and type http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 into your browser, login with as admin as the default user name and password as the password and then configure a few settings.

Since you're already having problems you may want to first setup the router without security enabled. Keep in mind that anyone within range will be able to use your signal. However, this way you'll be able to connect more easily. If you get connected, you should then immediately reconfigure with security, I like WPA.

Then use Mac's Network Setup Assistant to connect via Airport (System Preferences --> Network --> Assist me...).

If you're still having problems you could try updating the router's firmware to version 1.0.51 (this is for WPNT834 RangeMax 240).

Also, sometime it's necessary to power cycle your modem/router. Just unplug their power cords, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect. You may also need to reboot your computer.
