Under keyboard settings, there's an option to use the F1-F12 keys to control software features instead of brightness, volume etc. Those would be used in conjunction with the "fn" key.

My questions is, how many of you use the default option, which is F1-F12 control hardware be default and "fn" controls software, and how many check the software control option?

I use the default. I don't use the F-keys much in OS X software, most shortcuts are command+some key. One place that it bothers me is in Warcraft3, but I am too lazy (lol!) to set it to the software control option before starting the game and then changing back afterwards. I guess I could do an applescript ou Automator workflow that'd do it for me, but... I am lazy for that too!

Now that I know about it, I just switched to use the Fn key with the function keys. In that way, the keys will work normally when I run Windows XP in Parallels. Very nice. Thanks.
