I need a new laptop, and am torn right now between the Macbook 13" or the Asus UL30VT. I know they are completely different animals. I like the 13.3" size of laptop. One thing I really like about the ULV notebooks is the battery life. I have owned a unibody Macbook 2.4ghz (old model), and the performance was great, but the integrated card lacked a little. The new ones are supposed to be quite an improvement though. Anyways, if you were just to compare the G210m in the Asus vs the new integrated 320m, which will preform better? I know these aren't high performance but I would like to do full HD video with no lag, and maybe some slight gaming. If you could recommend any other 13.3" laptop for what I have described that would be great as well. Thanks in advance!

As far as I know, they're pretty much equal.

I don't know which is better but the MBP 13" can playback 1080p video flawlessly in Plex.

well... the 320m is supposedly slightly faster than a dedicated 310m.... so it should be slightly faster than a 210m

the 10 hours on the Macbook Pro 13" is a full power Core 2 Duo, its not a ULV processor thats extra weak like a lot of the more portable computers.

The cpu inside ul30vt is CULV, and it's overclockable to 1.7ghz with 1333mhz FSB. The graphic card inside ul30vt is also very overclockable with more GDram than macbookpro. So the cpu is a bit slower than the ones in macbookpro (not a whole lot though), and the graphic card can be more than 25% faster depending on how much you overclock. Without overclocking, the dedicated G210 is the same or a tiny bit faster due to more GDRAM.

Yeah, I had a SU2300 (I think) dual core celeron ULV processor and it really seemed to perform well for what I do. I also had the Macbook 2.4ghz, so I understand the difference between full out C2D and the ULV C2D. This doesn't really bother me, but with HD video becoming more prevalent, I would like my notebook to be able to handle it without a hitch. I know that the Macbook I had would get extremly hot and the fan would run really loud when I did video chat, which was annoying. Apparently the refresh after mine took care of this problem. The poster that said the Macbook can get 10 hours; can anyone confirm this. Sure mine could get above 5 if all connections were turned off and the screen was dim, but with normal use I would get a little under 3. My ULV computer got around 7 with normal settings and websurfing/typing up papers. Anyways, thanks for the input everyone. If you guys know of any other 13.3" (or around a smaller size) laptop that you could recommend with decent graphics that would be great. I'm not looking to spend more than around $1200. No m11x for me though!

the new 13"ers with the 320m is rated as a 10 hour battery from Apple. of course it depends how you use it, but for light usage I doubt it will be hard to get over 7 hours.

I'll see more when I actually use my new one I ordered... thats supposed to be delivered to me sometime in the next few hours.

The only idiodic benchmarks I've seen testing the battery were these guys.

they only pulled off 4.5 hours... but their testing is stupid. They loop playing back a quicktime movie until the battery dies.... which is going to use up power at a much higher rate than average usage does.

I do all my work on a SU4100 + Intel 4500. You'd be surprised how fast it is. It plays 1080p video flawlessly.

Acer has some great models coming out, cheaper and lighter than the Macbook Pro 13. Build and screen quality is inferior to MBP, but specs are way superior.

    Acer Aspire 3820TG-434G64n:
    - Intel Core i5 430M (2,27 – 2,53 GHz)
    - ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650 (1 GByte GDDR3) / Intel HD Graphics
    - 13,3" HD-ready Display (1366 x 768 Pixel);
    - 4 GByte DDR3
    - 640 GByte HDD (5400 rpm)
    - 3x USB, LAN, HDMI, VGA, Audio In / Out, Kartenleser
    - 1.820 Gramm

That sounds tempting. I actually like Acer. Lately, some of their laptops build quality has surprised me. I know that Apples quality is bar none, but if the pricing point is right on this TimelineX deal, it would definitely be worth waiting for.

I cant confirm 10 hrs but I can get 7-8 daily with the screen on 70-80 percent brightness (auto adjust) with the back-lit keys. I do word, ppt, surfing (flash), music throughout the day.
I havent tried to be conservative because at this point there just has been no need to be.
