I'm looking at upgrading the hard drive in my Unibody MacBook. I've been looking at 320GB and 500GB drives. I'm not really sure I need the 500GB, as the 160GB still has a bit of room left over with a 32GB Windows 7 install. But I'd like to increase the size of the Windows install.

Anyway, I was set on the Hitachi 7K320, but I've noticed that a lot of people were having issues with them in the unibody MBP. There weren't a lot of answers in the upgrade forum. So I'm here to see if any of you guys have had issues with the unibody MacBooks.

Also, I'd like to go ahead and get some suggestions for other drives that you guys have experience with. I'd like it to be a pretty good speed, so 7200 is preferable. However, I place more importance on noise and vibration. The Fujitsu 5400 rpm drive in the MacBook now is a little slow for my tastes, but acceptable. But I'd like a new drive to be at least as quiet. I've got a 100GB 7200RPM WD drive in my Dell that's really loud, and it gets annoying sometimes.

Right now the best hard drive is Seagate 7200.4 if you can find one. I think there's a 250GB single platter drive and a two platter 500GB drive.

you will not get a 32gb windows 7 install mine is only 2gb and 3gb left over from the wins 7 partition(that it makes when you install it) when i installed it on my vista computer it only took up 9gb. i would suggest the 320gb because there aren't many reviews of 500gb hard drives(also there is no 7200rpm 500gb hdd)

See, I think my Dell actually has a Seagate in it right now, but it may be WD. Either way, I thought the Seagate's were really loud?

Also, I'm looking to upgrade my RAM to 4GB. Is anybody using this RAM in their MB/MBP? If so, any thoughts?

That RAM looks great, and is really really cheap also! I can't believe I didn't already find that, because I am looking for extra RAM also!

Yeah, that's the problem. It looks too cheap to be true. Especially for Crucial.

Also, I notice that the Seagate 7200.4 isn't out yet. How comparable is the 7200.3? Anybody have experience with this Fujitsu drive? My MacBook currently has a Fujitsu drive (the stock 160GB 5400 RPM one), and it seems to be pretty good, there's just not enough space. I like how quiet it is though (I can only hear it in Windows).

NewEgg had some 7200.4 drives. I ordered one yesterday, but they seem to have gone out of stock.

In case you didn't know, Seagate makes a 500GB 7200rpm drive which newegg is selling right now.

That's what we've been talking about. The problem is that it's not currently in stock on Newegg.

The Seagate 500GB 7200 seems to be the HD of choice now, should be actually available real soon now. Tested vs other fast drives here - it blows all of them clear out of the water:

I went ahead and ordered the Fujitsu. Quiet and cool are more important than speed to me. Plus, 320GB is all I need and it was $40 less.

    I'd love to get a 160 GB X25 but $800 is a bit steep.
