I am looking to buy 2GB of ram for my MacBook Pro. Prices are all over the place. I usually buy at newegg.com but was wondering (as I am new to Apple) if there is a better place to buy ram.

Also, what kind of ram is everyone using? I think I saw mentioned that Samsung is oem, but what other kinds are good? bad?

    Thanks

Corsair, Kingston and Crucial are usually the top brands. Pricegrabber is another good place to look.

Thanks guys. Sad to hear that about Corsair for notebooks. That's all I use in my desktop.

I should have been a little more specific in my post. I am new to Apple, so I was wondering if I have to use special Apple MacBook Pro "approved" ram. Or, can I just buy any brand of DDR2 PC-5300 667Mhz ram, from any vendor I want? I like newegg.com myself. Any other good places you all like to buy ram?

    Thanks

I've read nothing but good reviews on the cheap A-Data brand memory from newegg.com, just make sure you get two if you do

The price for MacBook Pro ram is insane.. DDR2 PC5300 SO-DIMM doesn't come cheap.

Just my opinion.. I think Crucial overcharges.

    I also have one question..

Since the macbook come with one 1gb stick, can i just buy another one (ex, from kingston) and put in the macbook?? or do i have to buy two 1gb sticks that are exactly the same (and sell the other one that came with it).

You can just buy another Kingston DDR2 PC2-5300 667Mhz stick and it will work fine.

    Make sure it's DDR2 PC2-5300 667Mhz SO-DIMM

I have 2gb corsair pc2-5300 ram in my sz and it works fine. I hope it will work when I put it in the new macbook. I was reading a lot of reviews on newegg and a lot of people got it to work fine int their mbp's.

Is there a way to check to see if the computer is taking the ram correctly in osx? I'm a osx noob.

For testing new memory, get memtest for Mac ( http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17156 ). Follow the instructions for running it multiple times in single-user mode to make sure the new memory is good. Don't be surprised if the machine gets really hot during the testing (it makes the fans in my PowerMac go nuts, sounds like a jet taking off).

If you mean to see if it's just being recognized, just click the Apple icon in the upper left and select "About this Mac." In there is all your system info and specs. Also, check out http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa for lots of great help on all things Apple.

^^ Hey, thanks a lot. I upgraded to 2gb of corsair pc2-5300 ram. It is being recognized and booted up really quickly. But I had to take out the padding on the L shaped memory cover to be able to make the two ram sticks fit.

You really need to put that padding back on. It helps prevent the RAM from backing out of the socket. I know that the L cover bulges out from the padding but that is a simple fix. You have to slide the cover into place then use a small slot screwdriver or possibly a credit card to work the padding under the cover. It's pretty simple once you've got the hang of it.

Oh, ok. So did you have the same problem too? I'm going to fix this now.
