I might be a potential switcher in the future. I wanted to know when it might be a good time to buy the Macbook. I know that new technology replaces older ones and that I've got to deal with it, but I don't want the Macbook to be "old" in just two or three months. So will there be any design changes to the Macbook in the next few months that I should wait for? Or should I just get the Macbook now?

    Thanks :)

The MacBook won't be old in two or three months. Even the Core Duo MacBooks are still very powerful for today's applications. In a few months, your notebook may not be the latest model out there, but it certainly isn't obsolete.

The MacBook was just recently updated, so don't expect an update for it for at least two-three months. The MBP is probably getting an update in early 2008 with the release of Penryn, but you're looking at the MacBook.

Now. Recently they got Core 2 Duos and Intel X3100s. However, Apple drags its feet on the Macbooks' specs. They still come standard with combo drives!

Hey! Don't hurt my combo drive's feelings.

We all don't need DVD burners.. :p I haven't burned any CDs/DVDs in a long time...

    Sorry, Combo Drive!

Its true that I rarely burn DVDs too...in fact, I rarely burn CDs as well :D. But still, I think Apple should just switch completely to SuperDrives.

I know it won't be old as in the processor and the under the hood stuff, but if a new Macbook with a new design is released at the Macworld Expo 2008, it just looks old and i would regret it.

Well, in that case, if you can wait, then by all means wait. But it most likely won't be Macworld 2008, that's too soon from the last update. Expect it not before February.

    One more question...

So the next update to the Macbook would probably be sometime after February, maybe March you say? Now, will that be an update with the Penryn processors? Will it have a complete design change instead of the plasticky black and white MB they've used for a couple of years?

More than likely, the processors will be bumped up to the lower end of the Penryn line, as the MBP usually get those upgrades first and they're rumored to get them in January. As far as an external redesign, it's hard to say. I'm not aware of any rumors going about, and usually you'll start hearing them if a redesign might take place.

If they update in March or so, I would say most likely they'll update it with Penryn.

As for whether a redesign will happen...hard to say. There were rumours a while ago about the MacBook going aluminum in the October/November update, and there was an October/November update, but no major casing changes.

But if you ask me, the MBP needs a redesign before the MacBook does :p. The MBP design has been around for way too long.

Yeah... agree with you on that. The MBP design has practically been unchanged since the Powerbook G4 era. I don't know what design Apple could come up with that would be better than the one they have now though...

That's one of the things I've been thinking...the MBP design is so nice as is, what could Apple do to make it even better, while still possible and economically feasible for them?

I doubt the MBP will get a redesign in the sense of a new look... everyone loves the look. I think they'll take a page out of IBM/Lenovo's book and simply tweak the design more and more... adding/changing ports... etc.

I really don't think Apple would want to mess with such a good thing like the MBP.

I concur- if they are smart they won't change it too much.

Now would be the best time to buy a Macbook as the ywere just updated. If you can wait then as always wait as long as possible. If you keep waiting for the next thing you will never buy one.
