I keep hearing how Apple classifies upgraded RAM/HDD that APPLE DID THEMSELVES as "customized" models, and how you can't return or service them.

    Is this true?

Unless I'm mistaken, this is the rule:

    - If you haven't made any uncertified changes to your system, it's covered under warranty AND can be returned.
    - If your system does not match the system specs of a stock system you'd find at a B&M retailer like Best Buy, then you are still covered under warranty but can NOT return it.

So that means that if I choose to have Apple upgrade my RAM to 4GB from 2GB on a 2.4 GHz Macbook, I can get a replacement if there are flaws with they system, but I can't return it for a refund?

My first post asked for confirmation that I couldn't return AND service them and you said yes.

I said yes to "is this true?", answering your question. Then, X2P and blurb23 confirmed it. Then you asked the same question again. How much confirmation do you want?

YOu don't actually return it you will send it or take it to the Apple Approved Repair Centre for upgrade.

And yes they will rip you off they are not APPLES. I tried to upgrade one of our crappy iMAC that has ATI 2600 pro card with nVIDIA 8600 GS video card.

The repair centre wanted to rip me off with some lame exorbitant prices - that is $800 to upgrade the video card from ati to nvidea with 512 megs ram + $500 installation fees.

This rip off merchant is in Wanneroo Australia.

You said "Yes" to "cant return or service them". So you said you cannot get service on the notebooks. Nothing wrong with the OP wanting more clarification on something that does not make sense...
