I see on the Apple site I can get this package for $169 for a single license. I can also get iwork09/ilife09 for $79 each (so $160). Why would I buy this package if I am already a MBP user with OS X 10.5? Is this only meant for those that haven't upgraded to Leopard? Shouldn't they offer some type of package for those of us who bought our MBP within the last year?

I could see it if I could later upgrade to Snow Leopard for free, but I didn't see that listed anywhere...thoughts?

I've used IWork and Ilife, completely and utterly useless. It's better if you get the professional suite for each programs intent. Microsoft Office Suite for example.

lol. yeah. microsoft office mac is a professional suite that replaces ilife in any way.

    lolololololol.

granted, you probably meant microsoft office suite replaces iwork, but at least to me, the language didn't quite match up.

anyway, microsoft office for the mac is absolutely GARBAGE. stay away from that stuff. office for the pc is fine.

I find that pages does a good job. and keynote does a GREAT job. and numbers is slightly lacking. not sure about the new versions. those are the 3 programs that compromise iwork.

and ilife is great depending on your needs and usage. the software promises to be moderately feature rich and very consumer oriented (easy to learn and visually sensible) and a HUGE value for the price. i find that it succeeds and actually exceeds expectations in those tasks. it obviously doesn't touch software that is more difficult to learn and costs many times the price.

You wouldn't... that would be stupid.
Its aimed at those people still running 10.4 or lower and older version of iLife etc.
That's a bit harsh, its still (unfortunately) the most complete & useful office suite, and the new service packs have really helps improve the performance and stability of it, its quite useable.

As for iLife I actually really like it. I use iWeb and iPhoto alot they are really great for people who don't need alot of heavy Pro features (which is the majority), & just want a nice simple easy web page maker and photo manager.

LoL, thanks for all the replies and I do realize it would be stupid. My point, which I apologize for not making clear, is why doesn't Apple offer an iLife/iWork09 combo pack for a reduced price?

I do realize Office is a more robust suite, having used it for years and use it at work daily. For home use, iWork works for me...I do like the upgrades they've made to numbers (which is the main part of it I would use).

I thought moving away from MS would get me away from the "wring every possible penny out of you" business model ;) ...

Spoken like someone who has never even launched one of the Apps. . . I am sure everyone would love to spend much much more do get tons of features they won't use.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac is absolutely fine, you people are ridiculous, and it actually has some great features that the PC version has never had, plus it doesn't look horrible. Office 2007 has the worst looking interface of any application I have ever used.

The new iWork is great though, they streamlined the process of importing and saving Word documents and PDFS, it is part of the Save As... dialogue now. Really simple, with a lot of features that Office doesn't have.

The only thing that it is missing that would convince me to completely remove Office from my machine is a notetaking view that allows to record audio right into the document, ala' Office 2008.

I don't know what your problems are with Office 2008, I don't use it more than for taking notes and writing essays and things, but it works perfectly for me. Pages is better to use for everything but taking notes, and it is much much faster than anything else out there.

And as mentioned, Powerpoint is a joke compared to Keynote, especially with the new version of iWork.

Which you can download a 30 Day Trial of, by the way.

Hopefully Apple will offer an upgrade option for those with Leopard looking to upgrade to both iLife09 and iWork09, they are both definitely worth the upgrade. Since iLife09 isn't even available yet, you might want to just wait a few weeks. I am sure they will also have a trial up for iLife09 as well.

Didn't they do this last time? I say give it time, it would be odd for them not to offer this.

I don't remember them bundling iLife and iWork before. They have actually bundled Tiger/iLife/iWork before though.

In any case I don't think there is a motivation for them to bundle iLife and iWork. I'm pretty sure retail iLife discs already include a trial of iWork or the trial can be downloaded from Apple. This means that people can already try iWork out and if they like it, they'll buy it. I don't think there are many people who are going to buy iWork on the spur of the moment just because they are getting iLife '09 and a bundle would be a few dollars more. If you like iWork and like it you'd get it regardless of bundling. Some people would get it because even at $79, it's still cheaper than Office. Other people have to use Office and it won't matter.

It's the even more limited with iLife '09. Everyone already has a copy of iLife since it comes free with every Mac. So if people are interested in iLife '09 , it'd probably be for a feature they've got to have and they'd probably pay for iLife whether it's bundled with iWork or not. It may be greedy, but I don't really see the up-sell proposition.

In comparison the Leopard/iLife/iWork bundle makes sense because iLife '09 requires Leopard. If you don't have Leopard, the combined price for iLife and Leopard would probably be a disincentive to a lot of people. iWork is probably included as a bonus since I think Apple is really trying to get people to move to Leopard. I wouldn't be surprised if Tiger is still in the majority and I think Leopard retail sales have stalled. Everyone who is willing to upgrade an old Mac to Leopard has likely already done so, and at 10.5.6 Leopard is pretty much as good as it's going to get, and everyone else is waiting for Snow Leopard or until they get their next Mac instead of investing in their old one. Apple generally likes to only keep 2 generations of OS X in the forefront at a time and with Snow Leopard around the corner they probably want most people to have shifted to Leopard by now. Tiger has been slow to leave because it's just been around so long, like XP syndrome, and the Intel transition and Mac explosion happened under Tiger so there are just so many of them. The Leopard/iLife/iWork bundle is probably Apple's last push to cut down Tiger numbers before Snow Leopard comes out.
