    Quick survey :p

I have the stock 250gb Fujitsu MJA2250BH. It clicks a little and I can hear it working at times, but I suppose it's decent. I'm still going to upgrade to a faster one sometime.

What do you have? You happy with it? Does it make a lot of noise/vibration/etc.?
    :D

How quiet are aftermarket 5400 RPM drives compared to OEM? I'm thinking about upgrading but still a bit unsure. But since my Ram is coming in, I'm thinking about upgrading the HD.

Also, is it worth upgrading to a 7400 RPM? how quiet are those? battery life?

I'm staying away from SSD's for now as they are way too expensive for their size.

depends on the aftermarket drive, some 5400 and 7200's are quieter than the stock drives and alot faster, I know there is a thread around here discussing it.

SSD's are great if you need the battery life and dont mind an external for heavy data storage, but they are finally coming down in price

Most 2.5" drives dont make much noise unless they keep parking their heads and make that annoying clicking sound. and I agree the hitachi's are nice but I dont have any here

    320gb (7200rpm) wd scorpio black

the speed is somewhat noticeable and the increase in vibration from the 5400 is slight at the worst

I have the new 13" MBP with the Apple supplied 128GB SSD. Love it, really fast, no issues with the 1.7 firmware update. Boots in 16.6 seconds from the time I press the power button. Woot!!!

I replaced the standard drive in my MBP 13" with the Western Digital Scorpio Black (320 GB, 7200 RPM). Boots in about 22 seconds. I can't really hear it or feel it vibrate at all. I got it for $80 from Newegg. Pretty nice!

Not at all, only $315 BTO with student discount. That's about the going price of a 3rd party SSD with the same capacity without any install hassles. Well worth it.

Samung 256GB SSD with a Hitachi 5K500 500GB in the Optical bay.

This setup is way faster than the stock Fujitsu 250GB 5400RPM drive.

I have the stock 120GB HDD in my MacBook and the stock 4.5GB HDD in my Lombard. I wouldn't mind getting a new, larger hard drive for my MacBook and I guess it wouldn't hurt to get a bigger drive for my Lombard either. I was thinking maybe a 320GB for the MacBook and either a 20 or 30GB drive for the Lombard.
