    What happens if you eject your macintosh HD on your desktop? is there a way for it not to appear on the desktop?

    The Macintosh system will not allow you to "eject" the Macintosh HD, instead you can choose to remove it from view on your desktop. Choose "Finder-Preferences", under the General tab uncheck "Hard Disks".

    I don't think it lets you eject the boot drive/startup disc.
