Its a notification system that works with a lot of other programs. E.g. using growl in combination of google notifier, I can have a message pop up in the corner of my screen when my laundry is done. Its pretty useful :)

    Yep, what Chris said.

Growl is system wide and any program that supports will just plug and play with it usually right out of the box.

    -Transmission
    -Adium
    -Kismac
    -Cyberduck
    -Many more, etc...

the one program I wish growl supported is mail. It is not supported on leopard but is one tiger. It works well with adium.
