I having my MBP C2D 2.16GHz being delivered to me today and what brand of ram do you recommend for it? Does it matter if the ram brand is different than the already installed ram that came with the MBP?
-
It doesn't matter too much.......... most any good RAM will work fine; people seem to have good luck especially with Crucial RAM, but that can be expensive.
You might look at G.SKILL RAM....... this is quite cheap at newegg, but almost everyone I've heard of has had great luck with it in MBs, MBP's and iMacs.

This is what I bought for my laptop (Dell Precision M90) and it has been working well for me. It is compatible with the Macbook and Macbook Pro, and I have heard good things about it in the past. -
Stick with a reputable manufacturer such as Kingston, Crucial, Corsair or OCZ.

I dont know if these new fangled intel mac's are like the PPC ones, but i just upgraded to 1.5GB of ram literally about a week ago.
I bought regular PC2700 ram from the notebook section on newegg. i knew there was a "apple memory" section, but after checking it out and seeing the price difference, i was like "there cant possibly be a difference".
so i ordered crucial ram. it did very NOT so good things to my powerbook. i tried a bunch of different stuff. it just didnt jive.
So ordered ram "designed for apple notebooks". still pc2700. same speed and cl. more expensive.
but, it worked like a charm. i dont know what the difference is, other than it actually works.
So, before you go and buy some, read up on it. -
The memory requirements are different now with Intel motherboards.
The PowerBooks were a bit more particular about RAM though; Crucial stuff normally worked fine though, so maybe it was just a particular mismatch or something.
As long as it's the right kind of RAM it should work fine; as mentioned above, the $60 1GB DIMMs from G.SKILL seem to work very well for MBs, MBPs and iMacs, so there shouldn't be any problem with them. -
I have G-Skill in mine and have had no problems.

I have a stick of PC5400 Patriot RAM in my notebook and it is working fine.
Crucial is a bit a overpriced and I believe the new MBP's use PC5300 and PC5400 and PC4200. -
I'd go with G.Skill. It's cheap, has a lifetime warranty, and gets rave reviews every time.

I am using Mushkin without any issues.
-
I bought some Corsair Value Select when they were on sale at Outpost.com.
-
I bought a 1GB stick of Kingmax RAM and it seems to be running like a champ. No hardware or software failures. I have the 2.16 C2D and with the extra gig of RAM my MBP flies. I couldn't pass up the price.. only $79CDN for 1GB of 667Mhz quick RAM
-
RAM isn't as important in laptops because you aren't going to overclock it. Mostly, you just have to worry about the stick working or not, and most manufacturers get that done pretty well.
If all else fits, go ahead and buy the cheapest stick. No real reason to spend money on extravagant stuff. -
-
But despite that, they seem to make great inexpensive RAM that almost every Mac user I've heard of has had pretty good results with. -
i know quite a few people in my studio have upgraded with Corsair Mac Memory with not problems, I have installed a few of them myself actually, without a hitch. The actual memory slots in the MBP's seem a little janky though.

I bought a single 2gb stick of G.Skill ram from newegg. It was pc2 5300 and was supposed to run at 667mhz. However, it ran at only 533mhz. This was not because of the other ram I paired it with or anything with my system. Other users experienced the same issue so I returned it.
