The first guy said they NO new macbooks....a second guy walks up and didn't hear the first guy and says they have them in the back. The first guy looks embarassed. The second guy asked if I be interested in one of the older Macbooks. I said NO. He said let me speak to my manager. Comes back and says they have the 2.4 ghz model in the back. Asked me why don't I order online? I said because here I can walk home with it NOW. How much ram I enquired? He said 2GB. I said I want 4GB. He said we don't have the ram sticks yet. The first guy goes to manager this time, comes back and says they have RAM for it, but would take a couple of hours. I said I'll do it, gimme the ram. He said he needs to speak to manager again. I said forget it and walked out.

The place was full of tourists here in Orlando and he was afraid to have me seen walking out with a new MacBook....what a bunch of HOSERS. Really turned me off the whole shebang. lol

Why would he be scared of having you walk out of the store with a new MB?

And don't they have large fancy bags for you to carry the box?

He told me once I knew they had them that they couldn't display the new ones till the sold most of the old stock. The first guy lying to me is what made me angry as I hate to be lied to. I'll still get one if I decide I want it :D

Ah yeah... I always wondered why Apple just didn't do special sales on old stock. I guess they sell them as refurbed online... but what about stores?

The Apple store here was the same way. They had them in the back yesterday, but not up front. The worst part was that they were selling all the old stock at FULL PRICE. Ridiculous.

Either way, all the new stuff is out today. Thinking I'm going to stop and pick up a Macbook on my way home after work.

So what is Apples business model for selling off old stock? Sell as refurb?

The new systems should be available (and out on display) in all Apple stores today.

Else, just call the NYC store before you go and ask them :).

Well, whaddya think about that MacBook Alum? :D I need some portability as I work for myself....gaming, I only play Strat games anymore like GalCivII or upcoming StarcraftII....maybe CSS or TF2...should be OK for that? Or do I need to go for the 2.4 MBP? (new one)

dude... i worked in Apple store. I can tell you what is really going on:
They have $0 commission, and there are only two reason why they said that to you.

1.) One of the Apple employee is keeping a macbook for someone, but a dumb-*** told you there is still one more.
2.) Mistake does happen. We don't check the back stock 24/7; it is possible that someone decided not to want it or didn't see it.

Anyone have any idea how long it takes before Best Buy gets the new Macs? There's not an Apple store within 5 hours of here and I don't want to spend more on gas to get there than to get the computer itself.

Apple reps are programmed well to be extra nice while subtly treating you like a child. I've always felt like they're a bit paternalistic. But for the vast majority of customers (i.e., people who don't read this board), it's a sound business decision. We don't matter to Apple's bottom line.

I would guess at least 2-3 weeks minimum. Apple is going to keep their retail stores and distribution warehouse stocked near term for reinforcements and web orders, and then once the next few ships come in from China they'll release them to the rest of the retail chain (BB, NewEgg, etc).

Unless you need to see it first before purchase, you're going to be better off just ordering directly on Apple.com right now :).

I'm falling in love pretty quickly, although it was embarrassing last night asking my wife (who bought a MB last spring) how to install Firefox because I couldn't figure out how to do it . This thing is really thin and 4.5lb is surprisingly light (coming from a 5.5lb W3); it really does give you the impression of sometimes "almost" the MBA.

My impression is that more recent strategy games are *much* more graphics intensive than the past, and SC2 is just one example; I've never tried CSS or TF2, so no help from me there (sorry). They all might be playable, but fps is going to suffer if you can't survive with lower settings and res. I would think that the 9400M-GT should perform comparably to nVidia's older 9300m, so you could check performance benches for more info.

The apple store in my town won't even order the new macbooks until the current ones are sold out...
