Was this worth it? I think so...

So my brother is going to Iraq in March, and he wanted a laptop with a built in camera, so he can video chat with his wife and young son. Well, we just did a technology upgrade at work, and we are going to be selling off our old equipment (mostly old IBM T4x series laptops). I've had this MacBook Pro in my cabinet for about 6 months. Its beat all to hell (dinged up, scratches, screen latch broken) but the internals are fine (dvd rom, hdd). It was from a company that we purchased, so it wasnt technically on our books. I sent an email to the person in charge of the laptop sale inquiring about a price, and sent him all the necessary information on the laptop. Since it was out of warranty, not on our books, and in pretty bad shape I ended up getting this baby for $25; yes, thats correct - Twenty Five American dollars!!! The specs on the machine are 1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM, and I cant remember if it was a 100GB or 120GB HDD.

I replaced the keyboard on it, since there was grime and what (I hope) was pet hair under the keys, cleaned it up as best I could, and shipped it out to him. He's never worked in OS X before, and after a few phone calls and iChat screen sharing sessions, he is pretty much up to speed.

Here's a few pics of it. Not bad for less than $200 invested (including the cost to ship to him)

Wow, that's a great deal! That was also a very nice and caring thing to do for your brother, and I'm sure he's very grateful for what you did! Great job! ;)

Thats a bad deal man, you could even sell that for $1000 on ebay and buy a brand new macbook! Whichever works out!

Yeah, I probably could have, but didnt feel like dealing with the hassle. He got a good machine, for free, either way, and for him, this MBP is more than adequate.

Plus... I think it was a better idea sending him a less than perfect (vs. a brand new) macbook... because there wouldnt be much point in sending a 1000-1500 dollar laptop that might just get banged up and ruined anyway.

I think you did a great thing, and you got hell of a deal!

Nice job !!!! Glad to see that your brother rates !!!!

When family is more important than "Things", it shows me that you are doing what's right. I wish more people were like you.
I'm sure your brother will get a lot of use out of the MBP as well as the communication with you and his family.
