"Yes, it is 2gigs of HDD" he says POINTING AT the 2gig of RAM line.

"no i want 1gig of RAM because i will upgrade myself and 250gig HDD not 160"

"Oh sorry we dont have 250 here that is only available online"

"how much off for my student discount?"

"i believe 50 but let me check"

    Terrible thread title anyways.

Where ever you go, no matter what store, there will be employees who are clueless. So you can't blame Apple for that.

Personally, I would purchase a Macbook online, rather than buying it through a retailer.

However, if you are desperate, and you need it ASAP, then purchase it through a retailer.

Wow, I feel rather lucky having purchased mine at a retailer. Mine was purchased in Germantown, outside of Memphis, TN. Course, I went with the stock model (2.4GHz, 2GB Memory, 160GB 5400RPM, 256MB VRAM.)

I wouldn't say my experience was all that great, though. First, it took forever for an assistant to help me, though they were busy, I'll admit. Than it took her forever to retrieve it. Than she set up my purchase account with credit cards when I intended to pay with cash, so she has to start that over on the register. Finally after 29 $100 bills, I walk out with my MBP.

Thank goodness it works perfectly, and aside from a couple "shadow" pixels in the top right corner, it's perfect. :X

Buy online if you intend to customize, buy in the store if you're getting stock.

That guy was pretty ill-informed...and yes, not every employee is that great :p. That's be a dream business, to have all hard-working, well-informed employees.

What happened shouldn't have, but, perhaps the guy was young, nervous, new and just learning his job - a person's got to start somewhere. Could be that he was just having a bad day. Hopefully, he'll improve before an irate customer reports him and costs him his job.

The 2.5" enclosures are a bit more expensive than that unfortunately... for the SATA ones and of course, firewire. :-/

Completely forgot my MBP drive was SATA when I puilled it out to put the new one in. thank god I had the data backed up already.

    *edit*
actually, I don't see ANY 2.5" sata external enclosures with firewire on newegg... BOO.

Might have to upgrade to esata and buy the express card.

My experience was quite pleasant (Lenox Mall, Atlanta); this was back in August when MBPs were selling like cookies due to the beginning of classes approaching. Anyway, I called the retailer, asked them if they had he 2.2 Ghz model in stock; the lady said "sure, yes", " are you SURE? I'm coming over there specifically for that", "humm, let me double check".... "yes, we have it".
So there I went, showed my student ID and 10 minutes later (and 21 $100 bills less) I walked away with MBP and iPod. It was... pretty uneventful.
Every body was really nice and professional. Every time I pass in front of the mall I'm tempted to go in just to see what's on sale... :)

    Anyway, just my 0.02..

Not to trash the OP's thread but you are looking for Nordstrom service from the Apple store who employes kids that are just stepping out of high school. Some of them don't even own Macs or use them. They are just hired employees. This is not to excuse bad service but Apple's retail stores are just that. Mc Donald's is a worldwide multi-billion dollar establishment but you don' get Nordstrom service there either.
Most commissioned environments will contain more knowledgeable people because they get paid when you buy something. Apple's employees are hourly.

That would explain the wretched hairstyles and piercings I see on the employees...because myself working in a commissions/hourly environment in other retail chains and stores (I work for Sprint) we'll be crucified having those trends.....because it reflects the company. But then again Apple is a revolutionary company :) compared to the others!

Wretched? Painful perhaps, but not wretched. Actually, when I think of Sam (who I think would make a great Apple employee), this is what comes to mind:

In this area (San Francisco), he'd fit right in with barely a second look from anyone. [IMG]

Oh, yeah . . . I AM just joking, Sam. Please put away your ban hammer! :D
