So I have a HP Elitebook with a Display Port and VGA Port. I also ordered a used Apple Cinema 23". But now I am not sure what adapter to use. Has anyone used the 23" one before? I think it is quite a old model, unlike today's 24" or 27" there maybe compatibility issues. I am looking at

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE Active DisplayPort Adapter 100924 DisplayPort to DVI Interface

Please respond only if you have successfully used a 3rd party or apple adapter to connect a 23" Cinema to a Laptop before.

I have the 23" Apple display and have never gotten it work with any system that didn't have a native DVI port (some of my Windows desktops). The passive VGA adapters did nothing and our IT folks said it can only take digital inputs. The Displayport adapter you referenced might work but I think you'd be better off with something else. It does support movie playback where my older 20" did not but there are cheaper more readily compatible displays out there.

    Cheers,

if its DVI, it can convert with an adapter to DisplayPort... if it an older proprietary ADC connector they used to use... good luck. You may find a ADC/DVI adapter they used to make... then maybe go to DisplayPort....?

Look at the pic. It's DVI. So the adapter he referenced should work?

Yeah I would say use that procedure, I know that the cheap dvi to vga adaptors (non apple) don't work with their old style cinema displays, you had to use the apple (white) vga to dvi adaptor for it to work. I would try going the apple route anyways.

I didn't see any picture when I posted (though there were loading errors on the forum here last I visited) but yes, that pic is DVI-D. You cannot convert that to analog, so it does need to go to DisplayPort. The adapter may work.... it will probably work, but sometimes DVI/DisplayPort adapters have issues....

that will not work... it will need an extra mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter in line with it as well. HP and Dell and such that have DisplayPort have full sized DisplayPort, not the Mini version Apple uses.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I have a microcenter nearby so I can try a couple of adapters. It is a DVI connector so I think it should work with any adapter that says "Active"

I will let you know my experience in a couple of days. It's hard to find a 23" IPS panel that goes 1900X1200 for $250 :) That is the lure.
