I'm thinking of buying the MacBook Pro (either the 15.4" or the 17"). However, I' m not quite sure whether I should buy it in August (that's the earliest I can buy it) or wait and hope that Apple upgrades their MBP line quickly with the new processors.
The MBP will be my primary computer for university. I'm quite willing to wait a reasonable amount of time to get a MBP with the new processor. On the other hand, I'm not able to wait for too long (into the winter and the next year).
In addition, I'm a bit concerned about the various issues people are having with their MBP laptops (heat, mooing, light leakage, and etc).
Tips? Suggestions? Thoughts? I'd appreciate any advice you can give me.

Well I suspect Apple will announce new MBP's in August at WWDC or a "One More Thing..." event in September, but that is pure speculation. It also would not be suprising to see them wait for the Santa Rosa platform in January/February. You never know what they will do. Merom will not probably run any cooler than Yonah, so it will take a move by Apple to get them cooler. In all honesty, I think all CoreDuo chips run hotter than people are used to. They have to, if you think about it. Double the number or processors, but keep the same size die. Obviously more heat will be generated, it is just a matter of how good the cooling system is. Apple's is obviously not the best. I would say don't buy in August. Keep an eye out for rumors and invitations in September and then maybe buy in October or November, but don't be suprised when Apple releases a new one 3 weeks after you buy. It is part of the "Apple experience"!

Also, the Asus W2jc) will be released soon - a 17" screen with WSXGA+, excellent build. It should beat the socks out off the MBP

I didn't notice at first you were considering the 17". If you can deal with the weight/price/size, go for it. They do not suffer from the same issues as the 15". The GPU is not underclocked and heat/noises don't seem to be a problem. It is probably the most portable 17" out there to boot!

Another thing is, after Santa Rosa, u ll need to wait for the Merom that runs 800mhz FSB. The Merom launchin in august runs onli 667. COrrect me if i m wrong.
So.. u ll mayb need to wait for 1 year.... merom with the napa platform is optimal and santa rosa with the 800fsb merom is the other optimal state. -
Heck, just wait indefinitely!
Buy something today, next week its already obsolete. It's really up to when you really need it. Remember there is a difference between a 'need' and a 'want'.
Most people fail to stop and think to themselves before they purchase something.. "Do I need this or is this just a want?" I do it all the time, granted everyone deserves a 'want' from time to time, but most just overdo it and get something excessive.
But really getting back on point (sorry I ramble a lot), when you get the money, just go ahead and buy whatever you want. MBPs have nice resale values down the road.

i'd get it asap, the new MBP 17" is just insane and its as light/portable as most 15" PC laptops, and its as thin as most ultraportable notebooks (only 1" thick)
