    Hi All

Wanted to upgrade my Macbook HD and just wanted your comments or suggestions on the new WD 500GB 5400rpm or the SG Momentus 320GB 7200rpm for Macbook Aluminium. Which one is better?

I want something that's no noise, less heat or no heat and no vibration.
I heard that the Momentus 320GB produces a lot of vibration and other posted that is quiet. I'm just little confused.

    any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 series has already been announced in July and they are supposed to be in the market in Q4-2008. I hope they will be in sale soon (some rumors claim that they will be in the market on Nov 5th).

Their capacities range from 250GB-500GB with 7200RPM + 16MB cache... I would wait for this one instead of buying what you have mentioned...

And it will get hotter than the WD5000BEVT too.

If you want to make sure you have cool & quiet go for 5400rpm.
If speed is your priority go for 7200rpm.

320GB/7200 is still faster than WD5000BEVT.

The heat argument I don't think is very valid anymore. My Scorpio Black 7200rpm 320GB is running at 32C right now, with my system on for over a day. It only goes up a few degrees under load.

In your case it seems to be no issue. You also said yours is fairly quiet.

It seems to differ a lot as I've seen some people report heat and noise on the 320GB/7200rpm drives.

I know 2 guys who were hitting 60C with their Seagate 7200.3.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to buy now or wait for 7200.4 or SSD prices to drop.

I think the best strategy is to buy a single platter (250GB) version of 7200.4, use it for 1-1,5 years and then upgrade to SSD. By that time, SSDs will be much more common and will have quite reasonable prices...

Or just go all out and buy the 500GB drive and get an SSD when you upgrade to a new computer... I see that as much more reasonable. Going to be a little while before SSDs replace the mechanical HDs. Doesn't hurt to wait.
