I've been wondering whether I should get Vista Ultimate since it's 45 with an educational discount. Are there any programs that won't run on Vista? Also, will it be possible to run Vista on VMWare Fusion with 512mb allocated for it?

Whatever you do, don't give Vista less than 1GB.
