Just curious what your video temps are when running Vista.

    my idle temps are:

    CPU: 60
    GPU: 70

Under load (gaming) it rises into the 80s... it gets as high as 85-88 before fans kick in, and when the fans are going it hovers between 80-86.

Just curious if these temps match yours, because mine are much cooler under OS X, and with this damned nVidia stuff making me paranoid I just want to see if it's normal.

Is this for the 1520? If so, then those are really high temps. I think my m1530 is only slightly higher than your idle temps when it's stressed; I would definitely have someone take a look at that.

Also, are you sure that the temps are accurate? Try i8kfangui, you can monitor temps *and* control fan speeds.

no, this is a Macbook Pro, 17", before the recent refresh. I tried multiple apps to check temps and they all read out the same thing, so I think they are accurate. My idle in OS X is CPU-49, GPU-60 which are both normal. It just gets much hotter in Windows for some reason...

    In Mac OSX on MBP:
    • Idle: 50
    • Gaming: 70

    In Vista on MBP:
    • Idle: 60
    • Gaming: 80

    In Vista on desktop*:
    • Idle: 40
    • Gaming: 55

    * Got premium cooling components in there!

Mine are about the same. I have never reached 90C while gaming in Vista. Nor in XP.

    Idle, it's around 60-65C.

Sounds like mines a little higher than the norm... but how are you getting lower temps in OSX, dbam? All the other MBPs I've seen have similar temps to mine (2-3 degree variance of course.) Either way I will wait until it fails before I take any kind of actions to fix it.

I guess my temps are largely because most of the time I use the MBP in a somewhat cool place. My house is frigid because other family members like the AC on full blast, so that certainly plays a factor. Other times when I'm outside the house at the coffee shop it's slightly warmer at about 55 degrees celsius on idle and light load. I haven't gamed much with it though. The only game I've played is WoW on it which isn't that demanding to begin with.

I find it doesn't really matter if the game is very demanding... it pretty much runs at the same temps no matter what I play, however it's ALWAYS cooler on OS X. When I played WoW on OS X I don't think I've ever seen it rise above 82.

I found the problem, I think.

I brough the Power Plan to "balanced" instead of "high performance." Dropped the CPU cores to 55 and the GPU to 63.

well... in my opinion, changing the power plan to "balanced" is not a justification of the problem! .. I'm pretty sure that the other posters have their computer set at "high performance" and are getting the temperatures that they've noted.

Presently, you're having to compromise to get your temperatures down which shouldnt be the case ideally.
