The macbook pro gets about 4 hours of life, graphics card and 15 in. screen
at the cost of 1800 with a student discount, the lower end version.
    Vs.
The macbook and imac both combined is about 1800 with a student discount, both the lower versions.
macbook gets a better battery life, and the imac has a bigger screen and a 129 graphics vs 256 on a pro.

is the macbook pro worth the value when two machines can be bought at the same price? Can someone tell me which in their opinion which would be the better value.

If you don't need 2 machines, get the Macbook Pro or the high end Macbook. If you don't need a road machine, get the imac. The most affordable overall is the iMac. I'm not counting the low end macbook, but if you don't need a dvd burner it's an option. The least affordable is the Macbook pro. The Macbook pro has a higher res LED screen and is considered a better overall value but it is the most expensive. I opted for the $1300 Macbook being more of a bottom feeder myself :) And I'm very happy with it. I love the keyboard but I felt the MBP keyboard was not much different than the Dell I was replacing. So it's not simply bottom feeding, I actually like the whitebook more than the Macbook Pro for my needs. But 2 machines? Come on. If you gotta have 2 machines, consider getting a used imac for your second machine and a blackbook or high end whitebook as your road machine.

    hope this helps...

If I were you, I'd get the MBP and add an external display.

If you're trying to stay around $2000, then you could get a refurb MPB for around $1450. Then you can you get yourself a very nice display with the remaining $550. The MBP would be more powerful than either iMac or Macbook anyways.

If you're not gonna game and dont care for the larger screen of the MBP, I'd opt for a decently configued macbook and get an external monitor/keyboard/mouse. If you want to game, I'd get the refurb MBP for $1500 and an external monitor/keyboard/mouse. The only performance difference between and imac/macbook/mbp for non 3d apps is the hard drive. The processors and memory is all the same.
