I have Sennheiser headsets from Apple with the four-segment plugs and they have microphones in them. I have an adapter that is supposed to convert the four-segment jack to the line-in and headphone jacks found on MacBook Pros.

I haven't been able to get the Microphone to work though. I was wondering if there's something that I need to do on the MacBook Pro or the headset to get this working.

I would also like to use voice commands on my 5G Nano with these headphones. The documentation on voice commands that I've found doesn't tell me what commands are available or if they are available at all. Does anyone here have this stuff working? I use the buttons on the headset to control the song and volume but it would be nicer to be able to use spoken commands.

My main goal is to be able to use Google Voice on my MacBook Pro using my iPhone headset.

You should be able to simply plug the headphones into your Mac. Standard Apple iPhone headphones work fine with my Mac so I can't see why you'd need an adapter unless the plug on your Sennheisers was non-standard.

I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro. Apple provided support for iPhone headsets in the Unibody MacBook Pros which came out later in 2008.

so is it the adapter that doesn't work or is the computer not recognizing it?

I received the adapter and it doesn't work on my MBP. Some googling around indicates that the Microphone needs to be powered to use the Line In. Apparently one approach that works is to use a USB adapter with the splitter. I will get around to doing this one of these days.

I guess a MacBook Pro upgrade would solve the problem but my current one is actually very nice.
