I have an original Alum Unibody Macbook 2.4 GHZ 13".

If I were to upgrade to the new MBP 13, with the new GPU, SD slot, etc., could I use my existing Time Machine backup to transfer all my data and apps in one fell swoop? Or would it be absolutely necessary to use Migration Assistant?

I believe it would be *safer* to use Migration Assistant, but that it is possible through Time Machine. Going to have to get a 2nd confirmation on this one though...

You should not have any issues. Even if you went from 10.5 to 10.6 it should be all good. The only time you may have a problem is if you were taking programs from a PPC (G5) gen mac to 10.6 then its a no go.

why wouldn't you use Migration Assistant?

Migration assistant can use your Time Machine backup to work even.
