MacRumors is suggesting new MBPs as early as February 5, but perhaps no later than February 12. Should include Penryn, mutlitouch trackpad, and LED on the 17" LED. We'll see how reliable MacRumors' sources are! :p

Yeah, the pessimist in me tends to agree. If we start hearing more rumblings from sources like AppleInsider, then it might be a done deal.

Apparently the MBP update has been rumored to be released on every Tuesday after MWSF :p

    22, 29, 5th. etc. :p

Still, it may happen. Who knows? It's due for one.

Apple updated the MBP's in June 2007, and the iMac's 2 months later... is it possible that Apple will update the iMac's in March? Or do a wholesale update on both the MBP's and iMac's? I'm rooting for an update to the iMac as I'm in the market for one.

is there something in particular you have against the current one? i dont really see whats wrong with it and theres no way that the update will include a change to it physically.

I'm in no rush to get one as I still have to sell my current desktop first to make room for the iMac. My Zune is also going up for sale on Ebay, to be replaced by the IPod Touch.

Actually, I don't really look at AppleInsider now...it isn't as reliable as it used to be. In fact, the big one (9 to 5 Mac) has been really quiet lately.

Its always possible. Penryn's out, and I don't think Apple will wait too long before adding it in the higher end lines (MacBook Pro, now iMac as well, Mac Pro already done).

    just compare it to yourself..
when did intel release the memron processors that are in the current MBP?
    When did apple switch?

Edit: actually i did a little research and its not that unlikely for apple to release some kind of update...

Yea I gotta agree. For months up to macworld, everyone agreed that there would probably be an updated MBP at macworld, but nope. And ever since then its all been about a new one coming out soon, or whens the new one coming out.

Yeah, but the MBP and MBA aren't really in competition, so its not that important. Now if it was the MacBook, it'd a bit closer competition.

Penryn is a better CPU compared to Merom in every way you can think of (performance, less power consumption, price).

Apple would rather sell their whole complete computer lineup, not just the macbook air. Considering the macbook air cost less than the macbook pro and that people who want a macbook pro are very unlikely to get the air. It makes sense that apple would want to update there pro and get it out there to sell more computers.

Different strokes for differen folks. People who want the air will get it, people who want just the macbook will get one, etc...

I agree. Also, the MBP and the MBA have completely different target audiences. The availability of the MBA will not make the potential MBP buyer jump to it.

Besides, seeing all the majors (HP, Sony, Dell, Lenovo etc...) announce Penryn units, some available to order now and shipping as early as next week, that leaves the impression that apple is behind which I'm sure they don't want.

I just hope they don't rush the MBP update and make sure to get it right the first time around with no hardware issues. It's well worth the extra few weeks wait. I remember the first MBPs had screen-quality, noise and heat issues; we don't need to see that again.

Weren't those issues related with the initial move to intel? When they refreshed to the current MBP (2.2, 2.4, etc...) there were not as many problems as far as I remember. If they haven't made any radical redesigns of the internals, I can't see them having much of a problem.

It was no secret Intel is going to release new CPUs in January. It was predictable Apple is going to update their stuff as well as every other maker is doing.

I don't consider it to be anything crazy, like the iPhone...if its to follow the MBA's trackpad gestures (and most likely that's what will happen), then its cool, but I don't consider it "crazy" cool.

are these gestures that can be done with the new trackpad actually used? i mean i think they're pretty cool but do you use them regularly or something? or is it just something neat?

I have not even touched a MacBook Air yet, so I don't know. I guess I would use it now and then, but yeah, its not something extra cool for me.

Although the current trackpads on the MacBook and MacBook Pro are already multi-touch in a way, as using two fingers equals scrolling. I use this very often, and I love this feature.

What about an upgraded video card in the MBP (8800)? Do you think Apple will wait until the Montevina release later this year to bring this in?

Probably a small SSD (8 GB or 16 GB, 32 GB would be pushing it) and a traditional HD. Several high-end notebooks already do that, so its no wonder that Apple would follow suite.

That's assuming the MBs are also being refreshed. All indications so far point to a MBP refresh soon and the MBs to be refreshed later (summer 08 maybe?).

    What do they mean by:

"Hopefully, but sadly doubtful 3G or WiMAX (We know we keep saying it but hopefully Apple will listen)"

Anyone care to explan or elaborate on what they are sad about? I am not sure what 3G or WiMAX is...

3G and wimax are two different forms of wireless (mobile) broadband. Although 3G has been out for a while, just not available everywhere (depends where you are) and Wimax is a fairly new version of wireless broadband not really available but there are plans for rolling it out.

In a nutshell currently 3G (based on GSM) and EVDO (based on CDMA) are the current two forms of wireless broadband provided by cell phone providers, while Wimax is the new form of wireless broadband.

    3G

    EVDO

    Wimax

As for your question, probably because people hope to have the MB or MBP have one of the 3G/Wimax/EVDO integrated into it but most likely will not happen.

The feedback I have heard is that the new trackpad works great for browsing (3-finger sipe for advamcing or goign bakc), rotating, and zooming (the iPhone pinch). Anything that saves a keystroke is a welcome improvement!
