A powerbook G4 12" fell into my hands recently.

only problem is that it has a busted hard drive. it also has 768 MB of ram (256 built in, 512 MB as some kind of replaceable module)

I would like to remove the 512 MB stick of ram, put in a 1GB stick, replace the hard drive, and install leopard on this machine. it has a 1ghz powerpc processor.

I just want to know what i need to know to do this:

what type of ram do i need? what about the number of pins? does standard laptop ram work or is there a special powerpc mac type?

same questions regarding the hard drive: what type do i need? is there a special mac harddrive? is there a limit to the size of the hard drive i can put in? etc...

thanks in advance! will rep valuable posts.

    Found some info

The ram type that you need can be found here. Looks like its "1.25-inch PC2100 (also called DDR266) DDR SDRAM SO-DIMMs." according to the note.

Replacing the HDD looks like its a bit of a hassle, but its here.
Looks like its a 2.5" IDE drive.

And theres all the specs you need here, looks like it has all the technical info you need.

And from quickly looking, although its a different revision, theres the 1.3ghz manual, and it shows how to replace the ram, although it looks like there isn't much that could have changed. PDF manual is here

Before you go opening it up, just make sure that everything is correct for your model, looks like its the 2nd gen model, cause thats when they brought in 1ghz processors. Good luck!

After getting my MBP, I always wanted to get a 12", they look like a mini version of the MBP, and would be nice to have someday ;p

Honestly I wish my MacBook had a 12" screen. I know 13" isn't that much bigger, but it does make a difference.

Look on ifixit.com. They should have guides and all the parts you need (though I don't know how good their prices are).

    Any news?

Kinda interested in how much work (and money ;p) is needed to get a 12" up and running again.
