I'm getting ready to go on vacation and I realize that I have no clue where the two prong attachment for my power brick is. Normally it wouldn't be much of an issue as I only use the three prong plug while I'm at home, but I know for a fact that at least one of the places I'll be does not have grounded outlets (a relatives house, yeah it's old).

    So, I have two questions:
    1) If I use one of those cheap-hardware-store two prong adapters that sticks on the end of the three prong one is there potential for damage to either the power brick or my notebook?

    2) Can I buy a replacement from apple without buying a whole new power brick/how much will it be?

Thanks in advance and happy holidays everyone!

You can get them off the Apple site, along with different ones for different types of power outlets.

Thanks for the link. It doesn't look like they sell the adapter individually and I really don't want to spend $40 for an adapter that I will only be using when I'm not at home. Do you think if I went into the Apple Store and asked one of the people behind the counter for one I would have any luck?

I'm not sure, I've never asked about it myself. But if you don't live too far from an Apple Store it's worth at least going there to ask for it.

I live in the Bay Area so there is an abundance of Apples Stores around here :D. There are also a couple of small non-chain authorized resellers. I feel like I will probably have better luck with them.

Still, does anyone know if the cheap two prong adapters that attach to the end of the three prong ones could have any adverse effects? I have a couple of those and seeing as I'll be leaving later today I thought I might use one as an interim solution.

Well other then the fact that its not grounded, it should be fine.

Unless something touched the third prong while its in the converter ( i dont know what it would look like ), it should be fine.

Wen you use the apple two prong there is no connection to ground on the adapter, but with the 3 prong it is wired, so yea just make sure nothing touches that third prong.

Those three prong to two prong adapters should have a ground wire that you have to hook to the outlet. I know a few EE's that talk about how people plug the three prong to two prong adapters in, without hooking up the ground wire, and this is a fire hazard. I'm not sure if all of them have the ground connection though.
I would go to a hardware store in your area and ask someone who knows about electrical stuff and see what they say.
