2 laptops and a router. Both use the internet off of it and it works fine.

    Open Directory Access (in Applications/Utilities).
If necessary, click the lock icon and type the name and password for an administrator user on your computer.
Double-click SMB/CIFS in the list and type the new workgroup name in the dialog, then click OK.

I did this and made the workgroup name workgroup on both machines. I'm not sure what WINS server was so I left it blank on tiger.

I went to my hard drive and clicked on network, choose workgroup, I see the vista computer name and clicked that. then I clicked on connect. It then wants a password. I tried my computer password and that didn't work, so I tried the password used on the vista machine to get into windows and i get this error.

The alian "___" could not be opened because the original item cannot be found.

I need to set these up so I can transfer files back and forth over the network and I also need to find a way in tiger to make sure the windows side can only access certain folders of the mac.

hrm... i usually just go to Connect to Server (apple-k under finder) and do smb://ip
Then log in... and should present you with a list of folders. There are some drawbacks to the way os x handles SMB, but thats how I do it.
NFS might work better though, but I don't know anything about NFS in windows.

I have a separate "Share" Account (without Admin Privileges) set-up in OS X for Sharing. You can create a new account in System Preferences>User Accounts. Then I use the Windows Sharing tick-box in System Preferences>Sharing>Services. Click the Accounts button and only select my Share Account. I wrote a little guide not too long ago, hopefully it will help you.

Since my account is called "Share" it will be easier if I use that name in my description. Right now I have nothing in my Share account and it occupies 40KB. Small enough? It's really easy to move files into the Share account. I can access the Share account by going to "Macintosh HD"/Users/Share. By Default there are 8 folders within Share, 6 of which have limited permissions. There are 2 folders (Public and Sites) that are more easily accessible. For example, I can drag-and-drop files into Public and Share and all I need to do is enter my Admin password. Alternatively, you can change the permissions to the other folders to be more accessible. Select the Folder, Right-Click>Get Info>Details and change the Owner. You should probably change the permissions back after you're done copying files. There should also be a "Share d" folder in "Macintosh HD"/Users but that folder will not be included in Windows Sharing.
