I've been downloading some classic demos like Doom and Hexen, yet they are Power PC based. When the download finishes and I try and run the game, it says it is not compatible with my system. I thought all Power PC apps were backwards compatible with Intel based Macs. If I can't get this demo to work, is there some sure-free way where I can ultimately get it to work?

Not only are those games designed for PowerPC-Macs, they are also only programmed for Mac OS Classic (Pre-OS X).
You can try to follow guides like, How to run Classic (pre OS X) apps on Intel Macs, but the results are not guaranteed to be successful. Even running some PowerPC-only applications designed for OS X on Intel-Macs can prove problematic, as they must run under Rosetta emulation. -
Good luck. Intel Macs do not support Classic apps, and further, Leopard does not support Classic apps.

SheepShaver will let you run older PowerPC games. This is the web address for Mac OS X and other platforms. You will need to get some old PowerPC ROMs though.
