The screw that holds the bracket in place at the top of the compartment, I stripped it.

I used the correct screwdriver but the screw is too tight. I am going to use a drill with a tiny drill bit to see it that will spin it.

Does anyone know if hard ware stores sell screws as tiny as those? I want to replace the screw but can't seem to find it at the Rona.

I think you will have a difficult time finding it in a hardware store. You might try an electronics store, but a better bet might be a "mom and pop" computer store that does repairs. I have found that the owners/employees in those places can be very helpful, and they might just give you a screw that fits if they have one. If they don't they may be able to point you in the right direction so you can find what you need.

Or Can you send me a new screw that holds the hard drive bracket in place?

Certainly, nothing wrong with a good bit of honesty. What do you have to lose? They're not going to void your warranty because you were trying to replace a "customer replaceable" hard drive. Go for it.

you can get the screws from a hobby shop that sells model RC helicopters, take it in and go raid their supply, I find MANY replacement screws for all manufacturers there. and that hold down screw looks to be a standard metric screw.

You might be better taking it to a Apple store, they might even have screws. (why didn't I think of that before?)

Congrats! I would have also thought it would have been cheaper for Apple to send you ONE screw for $10 max, instead of sending you a $1800 machine. :p Mabye it's just a bad move by Apple... :p

Man what are those star shaped screw drivers called again? Something wonder things that supposedly can grip any messed up shape on the screws to unscrew.

star shaped drivers are called Torx, but to remove a stripped screw look for a screw extractor .. kind of like a backwards drill bit that is tapered

i took the mbp to an authorized apple service center (no apple store where im from), and they took the screw out by using some special screw removal screw driver.

They replaced the HD and put a new screw in.

At the end they tried to charge me $49 for a 5 minute repair (I was waiting there)...can they even do that? Anyway I then said a prompt "NO"...

Then he says that I either pay it or they aren't obligated to give me back my computer as per some contract that I automatically agreed to by getting service there.

So I paid the $49, but I will never, ever get service from that place again. I had no idea what he was talking about...what "contract"??

What Apple store did you go to? Did you sign anything before you gave it to them? Did you tell them that a phone rep said they would do it for free?

Oh, I guess that would make sense I read it fully. :\

Anyways, If you didn't sign anything before you gave it to them they can't keep it. You do have Apple care.

it wasn't apple store, just a retailer/service center under a different name.

It's a general electronics store authorized by Apple.

Anyway, i don't really care about it anymore because I have to study and 49 bucks or that store doesn't deserve anymore of my time.
