I just wanted to get some user's thoughts on moving your MBP around while it's in sleep mode. In the morning, I shut down my MBP before placing it in my backpack or briefcase, and again before going back home. It would be nice to just close the lid and be able to get back to using it quickly, but I'm concerned with the effect of moving the notebook around while in sleep mode.

So does everyone consider it OK to move around when the MBP is in sleep mode?

i don´t think that is a good idea, bcs. the fans are working in sleep mode. so when you block the fans, it would overheat your mac.

i would shut it down, bcs mac starts and shuts very fast ;)

the fans are definitely not working while it it in sleep mode, infact, sleep mode should be enitirely practical and almost eveyone I know puts their machine in sleep mode when moving it around in a bag.

it is important to just make sure it has actually gone to sleep for sure.

I have mine in sleep mode all the time, placed inside the case/backpack while travelling with no problems at all. In sleep mode the thing is completely silent and cold, nothing running except for the little white LED on the latch release glowing on and off.

I never shut down my Macbook, and only restart it once every week or two. I travel to college and back every weekday, and carry my Macbook with me during those travels. I have been doing this for two years now, and my Macbook is still perfectly fine.

I do this all the time. While the MBP is in sleep mode, it is basically 99% off. It doesn't produce any noticeable heat. Just make sure to keep it in a nice padded sleeve. If you don't have one already, I recommend the Tom Bihn vertical brain cell.

Be sure you know what sleep mode is, you need to check to see if the white light is glowing bright and dim rather than just being on. If the light is a constant brightness that means something is running and your machine should not be moved! But yeah, when your computer is in sleep mode it is perfectly fine to move around.

Thanks everyone, that's good to know! That will make using it between work and home much nicer.

I also often keep mine in sleep mode when I travel. The only problems I've heard of are when the latch somehow manages to come open, and it wakes up --- then overheating can occur (seems like this would be difficult to have happen, but people have reported it). Using a zippered sleeve helps insure this doesn't happen.

That was one of the many reasons for getting the sleeve in my sig; highly recommended. :)

I've used iStat and found that it wakes up the computer every once in a while. I guess a newer version of it has fixed the issue?

Yes? Come to think of it, there was one time I got to school and my laptop had been on. It smelled like it was gonna catch on fire.

Like everyone else I never turn off my MBP. I take it to school everyday and walk around a fair amount, no issues at all. You will be just fine.
