I know that Macs these days are using mostly PC components on the inside. Lets say I get my hands on a Mac pro motherboard from ebay; I stick my own hard drive, memory, Processor, and video card in there. Could I build a custom Mac Pro that way? I already know where to get mac pro cases, so I could stuff everything into a real mac case. Is the power supply proprietary? I think it would be an interesting project, and a legal way to build a mac. Any input? I have a lot of components lying around, so depending on how much a mobo would cost I might be able to do this for cheap.

I think putting in a non mac PSU and Video card falls under the "non mac" hardware. Also, GFX cards have diffrent firmware for macs...

I dont know about that. Honestally, you could always call the apple store and ask them if what you are doing is ok/legal... they would know

I think they would hang up on me. I may be able to get my hands on a Geforce 7300 for cheap and flash it with the mac bios. I know it works with specific 8800gt models.

EDIT: Found the power supply; it's 980 watts, and runs $250.

Unfortunately, I will have to close this topic down. While it is an Apple computer by using Mac Pro components and the Mac Pro casing, its not "authorized" by Apple persay, so I will have to close this topic down. Sorry!
