As we are aware, Apple Lepord will be coming out in Spring. Some macusers are really expecting the Time Machine as it,probably, can backup all the files, who knows? If it could do so, I couldn't figure out where it is gonna take to record those files and how it works. And is it possible to just install Time Machine on Tiger?

no its not possible to install time machine on tiger; because apple wouldn't realease the progran, perhaps other similar 3rd party software would come out later.

from what i can gather; Time machine will require an external harddrive for it to work; it works like windows' "previous version" in its server line and in the upcoming vista; but windows version don't require the use of external drive.

this is how (i presume) time machine is gonna works:

    1) it monitors files for changes
    2) when there is a change in the file; it will save a copy of the last version. (makes me wonder how big the file would get if you get a lot of file changes; probably they use some algorithm to just add the information that is changed, so there is no need to write the same data twice)
3)yerr.. and thats how i think timemachine would be. i'm sure u've seen the video, using the new core animation; pretty slick eh.

so.. yes it would backup all you files in an external hard drive, if you happen to broke/lost your computer; the data can be restored via the external hard drive.

my favourite feature of leopard would probably be that "spaces" thing.

Thanks for the reply. i am not so fancy Lepord because i dont think Apple has really done a big improvement from Tiger to Lepord. so still keep using my Tiger and see what happens.

I think wobble got it right. The external though would only be for notebooks. The idea is that hard drive space is getting really cheap and people are getting gigantic drives that there is space for something like this. Don't sour on Leopard just yet, Apple has a few features they have yet to announce.

Time machine is impressive but from what we know so far its not really as "essential" as it may seem. Lets be honest, its a nice feature to show off to friends but how many times have you really deleted a file and found out 3 days later you needed it again? Considering the SEPERATE disk space required to archive every file then I would probably turn the thing off and stick to my regular backup schedules. Plus, for us notebook users then without a 2nd HDD then its useless.

The thing that is most appealing to me about Leopard is spaces. Yeah, its been done so well that its amazing. I use Virtue Desktop now and while it works great then its going to be nice to get the real thing. Outside of that, nothing much has impressed me on leopard but I'm sure there are more surprises coming up.

yup, i don't think that the time machine feature would be worth while. i will probably turned that off. i think i will also turn "previous version" and "system restore" off when i get windows vista.

yeah, i agree that Space in Lepord is not bad and sometimes brings fun. Another problem is whether the 80GB hard drive is enough to run Lepord? still wondering...

Backing up files on the same physical HD isn't backing data up. The point of backing up data is to make sure that if you have a system failure or hardawre failure, that you will still have copies. So, if you copied it to another partition, it's not really backed up.
You SHOULD be backing data up to cd/dvd or external HDD. Otherwise you're playing with fire.
But I think this is a nice addition. But there are a few other features that seem really nice, such as the multiple desktops! I mean, wow, i can't wait to have multiple desktops, just like in linux/unix.
The leopard install is probably only a few gigs more than tiger.

For those worried about hard drive space, look at hitachi's new hd. 250GB! Perpendicular storage will jump start hard drives in notebooks. By the time Leopard ships many notebooks will be shipping with perpendicular drives.

I hope this drives notebook drives prices down... I was considering building a case with an HDD for storage and backup, but a normal HDD is quite big and needs external energy, and notebooks HDD are still very expensive.

Yeah, I'm still looking at getitng a case at some point for my old 60 gig 7200 rpm drive that was in my old laptop. Then figure out how to put XP on that :-D
