I want to use a new/bigger hardrive for Time Machine (tm). Besides being disappointed that there is no easy guided way to cover such a basic task, which - IMHO - will affect many people sooner or later, I followed this guide:

    http://blog.fosketts.net/2008/07/26/move-os-x-time-machine-backups-new-disk/

I get to the point where the recovery process starts, but eventually get an error, reading that the "operation is permitted".

If I try to simply copy the files via Finder, it apparently seems to work, but then the usual notification window will just sit there, saying "preparing to copy..". I've let it sitting there all night, but the copy process never really started - no error message, just sitting there and I had to force quit Finder, since I couldn't abort the process.

The new drive I want to use for tm has one partition, in the corret format, I can copy/delete files to/from it, everything seems fine with the drive itself. So what can I try next?

    Edit:
I gave it one more shot and as a last attempt I checked the option "Erase disk" (in Disk Utility), which I hadn't done the times before, since it absolutely didn't seem to make any sense for a freshly formatted drive. This time, with the option checked, everything worked perfectly.

    Thanks for the reply anyway!

try downloading a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner and using it to copy your HDD with time machine to your newer HDD. With just copying files over with Finder, you may be missing a lot of hidden files.
