Have not watched the whole thing but...how do you have a Rock-and-Roll themed event, and the music is Norah Jones?

I thought the Classic would survive, as it is a draw for the serious music collectors. I might get one at 160GB to rip my LP collection to, since my CDs almost fill an 80GB.

I don't get having the camera at the bottom of the nano, you have to hold it at the screen area instead of the control area so you don't cover the lens with your fingers. Other wise, it was a useless event.

This event had so much hype buildup that we all were letdown. I think Apple is running out of steam in terms of innovation and the "wow" factor. Apple has made consumers' minds become so imaginitive that technology can't even cope with. What really bothers me is that Apple has relatively no competition which translates into lack of competitiveness. A fine example would be the launching of the new iPod Touch... How hard is it to stick a mini camera in there? But even without the camera, there is no worry for Apple as their closest competitor is still trying to catch up to the original iPods and iPod Touch.

There could be many reasons why there isn't a camera in there, 1. Not enough room. 2. They didn't want to put a ty camera in the ipod touch. The one in the nano can't even take pictures because it's such crappy quality. 3. The rumors of problems with the cameras in early production could be true. 4. Maybe they want to save it for the next gen with even more additions.

The fact is that it isn't Apple creating the Hype it is all these Geek Blogs. You can't expect or at least I should say shouldn't expect them to always, always rock your world with every announcement!

iTunes 9 is pretty cool, 64gb iPod Touch for someone needing more space, which has been holding out. I don't see many rushing out to upgrade if they already have a 2nd gen 32gb. Pricing is nice!

It seems they want to give some spot light to the new Nano for awhile with the cam. I'll wait to see how well that works before saying that is a good or bad thing.

Upgrade to 3.1 for iPhone and 3.1.1 for iPod Touch.

What else can Apple really do with the iPod besides increasing storage size, better screens, etc.? A lot of people are probably bummed about the Touch's lack of camera though.

Next up for the iPod is integrated microwave oven and laser tazer.

This was no surprise to me; I'm not disappointed nor surprised...it certainly is low-key, with no redesign of any iPod. I don't think it needs it though - the big market is the iPhone, no longer the iPod. Plus, I do think they are working on a tablet and will be announcing that early 2010.

They merely had an event because its become "required" for them to have something to exhibit. If they didn't have an event, people would be howling even more (IS STEVE JOBS DEAD? OMG APPLE ISNT HAVING NEW IPODS...etc. etc.). Minor price drops, new little features. I didn't expect much. The big announcement is coming up.

Its disappointing in that for the many-eth time in a row, Apple has failed to surprise with its product announcements. Last time I was pleased with an Apple event was probably a good two years ago, when they first launched the iPod touch. Since then, it's been fairly boring and expected, in part because everything was scooped beforehand (iPod nano 3G/4G, unibody MacBooks, iPhone 3G), in part because everything Apple has been doing lately has been more of the same of what they've been doing in the past (MacWorld MBP update, iPod touch 2G/3G, iPhone 3G-S, every iPod classic, iPod nano 5G, etc), and in part because there's a few genuine "what the ****" moments (iPod shuffle 3G, Beats by Dre????!!).

Guys, I am now seeing and interesting thing...every time after apple event whole "geek" community and blogers start to whine...then after using new staff for a while, they go "...hm,this is good!" ....anyone else noticed that? it was the case for iPhone,iPod touch, new unibodies, etc.

i'am dissapointed that the iPod TOUCH does not comes with camera. but i'am more dissapointed that the iPod TOUCH does not comes with RADIO!

also, you might also want to know that the camera in the iPod nano CANNOT take PHOTOS! the component they need is slightly fatter than the nano frame can enclosed.

Well most features I could go without.
There is one thing which still makes Itunes horrid to use.
One would be: whenever i reinstall windows i lose all my playlist info (ratings,...) and I have to spend a few days listening to crap from my list until i re-rate enough things. Backup of itunes lib is not comfortable (of course i do not want to consolidate it)

Another thing is weeding of dead files. Sometimes i reorganize folders, use autotagging proggies that change paths. Result: garbage library

A few things that perhaps aren't event related that apple has done right in combination with this event:
The new 3x update to the ipod touch is a big step in the right direction.

Why? Because now pictures saved in safari don't look like blurry garbage. I can now save pictures to my picture list from email.. HURRAY!

Voice memos and some other options were also added including the sideways keyboard. I'm very happy with this upgrade. Helping existing customers by getting them all on the same version with an update that includes all previous updates is really nice.

Itunes 9 also seems to be working well. I've waited a long time to upgrade and a new release version gave me a reason.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The next big thing from apple is going to be their tablet thing which verizon will likely carry. I'm also hoping they kick AT&T to the curb and get an ipod out on the verizon network like the other 80 million verizon subscibers. It's possible but will have to have a CDMA chipset in whatever they do offer. A combination GSM CDMA chip is already available in some blackberries. I think these will likely be the next big things from Apple.

What's the USP of the touch ? A console? I could get the psp which has a better processor than the one one in touch. Better visuals too. I'm sure the touchscreen would be too cumbersome to use for the hardcore gamer or even the average gamer. I guess the casual gamer( train travel) could be bought with this. But then again, apart from the amazin UI ( which is now boring, after 2 years of the same crap) and touchscreen , i don't think it stands up much against the psp. Oh and i know the app catalog is huge and all. But is there much of a comparison between the games of the psp and the touch? the assasins creed was like crap compared to gow on the psp.

But as an ipod, its kickass. (for which i wouldnt spend 200$)

This may not be a very suitable question for this forum, but since nearly all I could find on Google related to this was useless, please bear with me:

For how long is it possible to use an iPod? Are they built well-enough to withstand, say, 5, 6, maybe 7 years of use, especially the hard-drive models? Is there anyone whose generation 1 iPod still works fine?

As long as you take care of it, the player should last until well after you may decide to replace it (I've still got a 1G Black Nano that I use in the car for the young kids' music, but we have several newer Nano's and two Touch's in the house).

The iPod's internal battery will eventually decrease to minimal charge and/or fail, as all Li-Ion batteries eventually do over extended periods of time. Hard-drives also may wear out, but because it's a mechanical part and not due to any other problems.

As for 1G or other early iPods, the formfactor is pretty big and the storage, by today's standards, is pitiful (you easily get 4GB in the current Shuffle/Nano). Outside of hanging onto one for sentimental value, I doubt anyone is using them on a regular basis.

I've had a first gen iPod nano for 5 years now, that's been abused and still works flawlessly. The only thing is the battery now holds very little charge which, generally, is about the only thing that can and will go wrong with these things.

Of course it didn't help that I frequently fully discharged the battery which isn't a good thing for Li-Ion batteries but I didn't know that at the time.

I've always looked forward to Apple's events because of the way they introduce their products. The new iPod Nano's look nice and the price reduction for the higher end model is a plus as well as the slightly larger screen. I'm not sure about the camera thing though. I guess you're supposed to hold it with the wheel to the right?

I think the biggest is the public appearance of Jobs and iTunes 9. I've found iTunes 9 to be very nice. I'm using Windows 7 RC and I've found that you can hover over the application icon on the taskbar and there's a "previous", "pause/play", and "next" button. That's pretty cool.

Thanks a lot for all the replies; I consider getting a Classic for storage reasons, but I regret to say that after a MacBook HD (and fan, and battery...) dying on me (worse things have happened to my friends' Macs and iPods), I'm somewhat concerned about the reliability and longevity of merchandise from Cupertino.

It's quite an investment for me, and I'd like to be able to use it for a *long* time--whereas the general impression I have is that especially with these minor, non-essential improvements on a yearly basis, these devices are more like fashion statements that somehow 'ought to' come-and-go as the trends dictate.

There have been a couple of failure-surges where for some reason only Apple-logoed drives manufactured by Hitachi somehow just died; several other examples (especially on 1st-generation products) suggest that there's sadly some sort of problem with quality-control over at Apple.

I'm perfectly aware that products of other manufacturers are just as prone to failure, but given the infamous 'Apple tax', and their 'historical' claim to stability--systems that 'just work'--one expects a little more care from Apple. I know of no single person who owns a MacBook and hasn't experienced some serious inconvenience because of an abrupt failure.

    But, sorry, that's off topic.

this keynote shows two things of opposite:

i am right about steve jobs's importance in apple's growth, he is so much of an innovator that after his crush in health the company has no means to bring out innovative products to customers. snow leopard, new macbook pro, new touch, new iphone all show a trend of minute evolution rather than the "hits" apple is used to bring to the market.

maybe i am wrong and even steve jobs is out of idea to run for the company, but i am seeing a typical company rather than "apple"

There's nothing wrong with a company who has the balls to work on evolving existing products instead of simply ramming new features in just to say the feature is there. If Apple didn't innovate the way they do/have, then there would be grounds for complaints, however innovation combined with evolution is a fine in my books.

Apple might be playing it safe because of the market, they probably don't want to bust out a new product that might not take well in this market.

It should have come out years ago when the iphone came out. If the iphone can hold a 3.2mp camera the touch should have been able to house a 2mp camera considering how similar they are in shape.

Just because it COULD fit, does not mean there is any free space left for it to go. The iPhone is bigger and was designed with a camera. iPhone depth= 12.3mm iPod Touch= 8.5mm that is a big difference. Have you seen a tear down of the iPod Touch?
