I'm looking for some great speakers that will sound fantastic while I'm watching movies. The reviews seem to favor these as one of the best out there over the bose for 400 dollars.
Is there an external USB sound card or do the speakers that go through USB give me true THX quality?
Are these what I should be looking for since I don't have a good sound card?

Yes, they'll work. I owned them for a week, but returned them because of a permanent humming sound (exchanged twice, actually), and the power button is behind the subwoofer, which was a pain in the ass to get to. Ended up getting a Logitech set instead.

get the logitech z5500. they're thx certified and since your macbook has optical out (err..i assume it does since my mbp does), you'll get really good sound quality. i think i almost got an orgasm one time listening to them.

Try checking Preferences > Sound > Output.

Is the quality high enough out of the headphone jack or do I really need speakers that use USB to get good quality?
If I wanted surround sound I would need USB ones correct? -
and bose isn't actually much good

Bose is top of the line dude, what are you talking about? Yes it is overpriced, but it is still the best known brand for top f the line audio equipment.
-
Bose is heavily over priced. I'm not saying they do not make good products though. But they are not the top for audiophiles and speaker reviewers.
But I'm looking for the best that will work for me in the sub 500.00 market -

I can fun the Logiteech Z 5500 speakers which is a fantastic setup through the optical port of the macbook
I just needed a mini optical adapter to a full size one. -

Get the Logitech Z-5500. I have the previous Z-680's and they are the most amazing set I have ever owned. Movies sound amazing. Don't bother with the Bose, too much cash for little or no benefit over the logitech's.

I have those speakers hooked up to my iMac at home - they ROCK. Sound quality is amazing, great bass. I'll connect them to my MBP and see how they sound, but I'm betting they will sound just as crisp.

A friend of mine has those (or a previous iteration of them). They seemed to be very good, at least to me.

nice desk btw.

no highs, no lows, must be Bose. -

I have never liked bose. They charge a premium price for not premium products.

The only thing Bose makes that's worth what you pay for are their QuietComfort 2 noise cancelling earphones.
And the audio systems they put into cars.
Other than that, everything Bose is crap. My best friend bought a set of their home theater components (against my advice). Great response from the small spakers for upper ranges around the room, but all the mid and bass came out of the big sub box over in the corner. No spatial seperation.
My B&W speakers and Yamaha receiver blows his out of the water. I didn't pay too much more for mine that he did his either.
If you want a good set of speakers for your MB(P), get the B&W Zeppelin. It looks pretty and sounds awesome. -
im no good with audio but what i would look for in additional to good sound is good cable management. im using these x-530 logitech 5.1 speakers and i hate how all the satelite goes to the sub then the sub goes to the speaker with the power button THEN to the pc... it probably had more cables than the rest of my desktop

You should go with those speakers, I've never used them and I don't know about the sound quality. But just imagine the looks you'd get if you pulled them out somewhere.
You could also put a sticker on your macbook to make it look like a giant iPod Nano and say you stole it from a giant -
Yeah sure audio techies say that Bose isn't top of the line, but I have a pair of QC3 headphones and the lows are amazing on this despite what people say about bose. I take a lot of footage of me and my brother jamming on our instruments and I noticed that with the QC3 headphones I am able to hear my brother's bass better than even my drums(when listening with other headphones the drums overpower the bass)... I don't know if it has to do with the headphones design or the speakers, but the bass comes in amazing despite what you guys say. And highs, haven't really tested it there.
-
The QC models are their noise cancelling line.
So of course, if it blocks out everything else but the base, it'll sound better than non-noise cancelling earphones. -
No, I meant as in when viewing recorded video. The bass comes in much more with these headphones than any others I have tried, including external computer speakers.

The sound that comes from bose speakers is not really natural or realistic. Some people may think they sound good, but that is just because of all of the extra bass they add. If you listen to a song on bose headphones vs listening to the song in real life. They will sound very different because bose adds a bunch of extra bass to make the sound, sound "better". I would strongly recommend the Sennheisser HD280's as the reproduce sounds very accurately. I actually liked bose headphones the very first time i heard them but then after a while of reading reviews and such, i realized why they were not so good.

This may not work for everybody, but it has satisfied me for 8 years...
I've got an old Pioneer receiver from the 80's. I run an RCA adapter off the back of my Mac, which runs into my aux in on the receiver. That powers four giant speakers from the 70's and 80's (The giant wood ones that stand about 32" tall). Two of them have 12" woofers, 5" mids, and 2" tweeters. The other two have 15" woofers, 6" mids, and 2" tweeters.
Watching movies with it is amazing. I can feel the earthquake scenes
I can also hear it across the street if I want to.
Total cost: About $40.
These speakers work with my macbook?
